Our outcome is to implement effective, defensible and lawful biosecurity regulation and policy to facilitate safe trade in aquatic and terrestrial animals, reproductive materials, animal products and biological goods, and minimise marine pest risk.
We are a skilled multidisciplinary workforce that works together with our partners in state and territory governments, Animal Health Australia and industry to deliver optimal animal biosecurity outcomes for Australia.

The Animal Biosecurity Branch develops biosecurity policy and provides technical and scientific advice for the safe importation of animals and animal products, including aquatic animals and their products, using science-based risk analysis.
It also provides scientific and technical support to gain, maintain and improve access for the export of Australian animals and their genetic materials.
The branch provides policy and technical advice on marine pest biosecurity.
The branch comprises three sections: Livestock and Zoo Animals; Avian, Biologicals, Companion Animals and Dairy; and Marine and Aquatic Biosecurity.
The Principal Regulatory Scientist works with a small team to support regulatory science as it relates to animal biosecurity.
Key priorities for 2024-25 include:
Lead the development of a Departmental Science Strategy, Support the conclusion of major animal biosecurity import risk assessments and implementation of the Animal Biosecurity Branch work plan.
Oversee reviews of internal risk assessment processes and implementation of reforms.
Bring together teams to address high priority work activities as required.
The key duties of the position include: The Job Providing scientific oversight, quality assurance and advice on animal biosecurity import risk analyses and policy reviews to ensure they meet Australia's Appropriate Level of Protection, are high quality, defensible, have consistent risk management measures, and are delivered in a timely manner.
Maintaining and improving Animal Biosecurity Branch's and Biosecurity Animal Division's scientific capabilities, including risk assessment methodologies and strategic approach to risk management.
Leading cross-cutting scientific initiatives for Biosecurity Animal Division, responding swiftly to critical situations; coordinating resources and assisting in the resolution of complex issues.
Supporting a robust and respectful science culture across the branch and division and promoting a culture of scientific integrity.
Providing scientific and policy advice to the Assistant Secretary, Animal Biosecurity Branch, other Senior Executive, Minister's office and Minister as required, particularly on biosecurity import risk analysis.
Knowledge and experience Proven ability to lead change and deliver results by providing a clear sense of direction, setting priorities, instilling the desire to succeed, developing capability and acknowledging performance.
Mandatory qualifications
As a minimum a degree in a relevant discipline is required, for example Veterinary Science, Agricultural Science, Biological Science or other equivalent discipline.
