Job Overview:The Principal Naval Architect is responsible for interpreting internal or external business issues and recommending best practices.
They will be tasked with solving complex Naval Architecture-related problems and will work independently with minimal guidance.
The Principal Naval Architect may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in Naval Architecture.
As such, they must have in-depth expertise in Naval Architecture as well as broad knowledge of the Naval Architecture discipline within the Engineering function.Essential Qualifications and Education:15-20 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultant predominantly leading a team of engineers, performing naval analysis to support the design and installation of offshore structuresBachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture (Master's is preferred)Detailed knowledge of installation techniques and analysis methods, and detailed knowledge of the theory, content, and application of standards, codes, and guidelines as applicable Knowledgeable in project coordination and execution skillsPreferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of a professional engineering societyKey Tasks and Responsibilities:Lead a team of Engineers, responsible for the following design inputs and installation engineering:Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standardsProvide installation loads on offshore structures to the Structural Engineer at the Engineering phase of the project so that the structures could be designed for the installation loadsPerform detail installation engineering calculations to confirm the installation loads are within the permissible capacities of installation equipment like barges, derrick barges, cranes, etc.Evaluate the limiting weather in which various offshore installations can be performed without overloading the installation equipment as well as the installed structuresApply in-depth skills and broad knowledge of the business to address complex problems and nonstandard situationsPrepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and proceduresManage own time to meet objectives and (as Lead Engineer) forecast and plan resource requirementsClearly communicate and explain difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of viewWhen acting as Lead Engineer, in addition:Direct an Engineering team as a Lead EngineerLead the Discipline engineering design of the assigned work area and complete it within the planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, MDR, and project-specific procedures and to a high professional standardPlan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on the assigned project including scope, deliverables, schedule, and all manpower resources - agree allocations with the Discipline ManagerEnsure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identifiedMaintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying any required corrective actionAct as project representative for the Discipline during meetings with Project Team, Customer discipline lead and relevant agencies such as certifying authorities, auditors, third parties, etc.The Tasks and responsibility of the Principal Naval Architect (PNA) includes the following:Become fully familiar with the project scope of work, specifications, schedule, and all inter-discipline requirements; including identifying concerns as early as practicable and taking appropriate initiatives to address issues, interpreting contractual requirements as they relate to engineering executionMember of the Bid Engineering team; provides Naval inputs in the form of analysis to be performed at the Bid stage, and provides execution workhoursIdentify the limits of installation hardware, and evaluate if the installation can be performed by in-house hardware or if there is a need to hire external hardware based on the calculated limits; effective evaluation helps in costing the bid accurately, thereby, improving the probability of winning a particular bidRaise Technical queries and deviations from standards, whenever necessaryDuring the EPCI stage, the PNA is involved in the following:Identify the changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications, including providing any necessary supporting documentation and estimates Provide similar support for variation ordersInterface with all disciplines to develop clash-free designsInterface with other departments to obtain input for discipline designs and drawingsMaintain close coordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, fabrication, Marine, and Project Management Team, as requiredDocument substantive communications (communications that result in significant decisions or assignment of actions) and forward copies to Discipline Lead Engineer and Discipline ManagerRaise technical queries to obtain missing information, clarify work scope, and maintain preferred McDermott procedures, specifications, standards, practices, and operational requirementsPrepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve engineering design basis, philosophies, and technical specificationsParticipate in finalizing deliverable lists and deliverables, ensuring compliance with specifications and functional integrityReview project schedule and fabrication schedule in relation to construction sequence, milestones, and engineering scopeAttend project kickoff and review meetings, vendor meetings, engineering meetings, and offshore site surveys, as requiredProvide technical direction and review of Designers producing products related to Installation Support EngineeringPrepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve design reports and proceduresAssist in providing necessary design inputs to other disciplines to enable them in proceeding with their deliverablesAssist procurement personnel in procuring discipline equipment, materials, and services; ensuring that work produced complies with Customer objectives and procedures Procurement assistance includes preparing Specifications, approving requisitions, evaluating technical quotations and preparing queries, compiling bid tabulations and recommendations, preparing purchase requisitions, and coordinating with Procurement to expedite vendor documents, as directed by Discipline Lead EngineerAssist in updating weight report based on receipt of vendor informationReview and (as Lead Engineer) approve vendor and subcontractor submittals, checking for compliance with project specifications and providing comments as necessaryReview and (as Lead Engineer) approve design verification through single-discipline check /inter-discipline check (IDC)Keep the Discipline Manager and Project Management Team apprised of all activities and concerns, technical, budgetary and manpower relatedAssist in providing inputs for actual, planning, and forecasting progress reports including associated productivityAlert the project team of any deviation from the scope or a need for a change orderMonitor KPI measurement results and take corrective action as necessary to improve Discipline performance, including performance at interfaces with othersCoordinate with other Discipline Lead Engineers and Designers to ensure timely receipt of necessary design inputsCheck final subcontractor and vendor data manuals to ensure that all requested data has been received and approvedReview the technical documents prepared by 3rd party service providers or ones prepared by other MDR offices as a part of installation engineering calculation or proceduresPresent issues and problems to Customers in a timely manner and assist the Project Management Team (PMT) in negotiating resolution in accordance with project and company requirementsPerform (as required) Technical Quality Audit reviews in accordance with MDR Global ProceduresLiaise with the Marine Warranty Surveyor, Classification Society, Client's representatives, etc.
to provide responses to comments made by them on Naval documents and their eventual closureCapture lessons learned and enter into MDR's Lessons Learned systemAdditionally, the PNA is involved in the following for the day-to-day running of CSE activities:Guide less experienced engineers on MDR and Discipline procedures, standards, worksheets, auditors, third parties, etc) on their review and approvalSupervise and guide assigned engineers and coordinate with Lead Designers for Discipline engineering and design deliverablesResponsible for the engineering integrity of the assigned work areaMonitor costs of own work processesAssist in the maintenance of departmental technical guidelines and standard calculation notesParticipate in development and maintenance of Global Procedures, Software, and StandardsDevelop communication and presentation skills (eg, write technical papers, participate in conferences and/or seminars, present design solutions, and/or present topics at 'lunch and learn'; etc.
)Identify and provide training to staff in specific techniques and proprietary softwareProvide information on employee performance to the Discipline ManagerAssist the Discipline manager in interviewing job applicantsPerform, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve Installation engineering designs, analyses, evaluations, calculations, and procedures for loadout, transportation, and installation of offshore structuresIdentify project staff needs based on knowledge of individual engineer's skill sets and provide requests to the discipline managerPlan, organize, and assign tasks, responsibilities, and manhour budgets to the discipline team, and verify tasks are completed within budgetsLead the Discipline team during project audits (internal, Customer and third-party technical audits) and Design reviewsAssist the Discipline manager in the preparation of quarterly forecasts and manpower planningAnticipate project engineering needs and plan accordinglyCoordinate with vendor for discipline-managed/produced itemsAssist the Discipline manager and Project Engineering Manager or Project Manager in the Performance Evaluation of project team membersReport to: Manager (Construction Support Engg)Liaise with: Engineering disciplines, Fabrication Group, Marine Group, Hookup Group, Safety Dept, Project Management Team, Document Control, Project Planner, Project Cost Controller, QC and Certification Group, Procurement Group, Subcontractors and Vendors, and CustomersSupervises: Senior Engineers and Engineers
