We have an exciting opportunity in the Legal Services team. The Legal Services team are specialists who provide independent legal advice and representation related to the construction, commercial and public administration activities of the department and assist in the development of legislation.

As Principal Legal Officer, you will assist with the protection of the legal interests of the Departments of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works and the Department of Energy and Climate, specifically with respect to property, contractual and commercial matters. This position reports to the Director – Property Law and has no direct reports.
What we are looking for: Providing and ensuring the provision of superior level, strategic, independent and professional legal advice and documentation to all levels of the department on property law, commercial law, and/or administrative law matters.Maintaining a superior level of knowledge of contemporary issues impacting on property law and commercial law and their relationship with relevant government policies and initiatives.Assisting in the departments' development and administration of efficient and effective policy and legislative frameworks, by providing legal and risk research and advice.Liaising and negotiating effectively with relevant internal and external stakeholders on matters affecting the operations of the departments.Providing superior level independent advice regarding dispute resolution and the management of litigation relating to property and commercial law, on behalf of the departments and the State.Leadership competencies:

Demonstrate accountability for the execution and quality of results through professionalism, persistence, and transparency.Maintain a high standard of practice through governance and risk management.Make considered, ethical and courageous decisions based on insight into the broader context.Build and sustain relationships to enable the collaborative delivery of customer focused outcomes.Fosters an inclusive workplace where health, safety and wellbeing is promoted and prioritised.Mandatory requirements: Been admitted or be eligible for immediate admission as a legal practitioner by the Supreme Court of Queensland.Comprehensive knowledge and experience in contemporary property and commercial law.Post admission legal practice of at least five years is highly desirable.Superior communication and relationship management skills.Due to machinery of Government, the Department of Housing is now called Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works.
