Primary Objective: To provide the Northern Territory Government, its Authorities, and its Instrumentalities with high quality commercial legal services.
Context Statement: The Commercial Division provides strategic legal advice and drafting to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies, and statutory bodies. This position is to provide high quality legal services with respect to Native Title claims and related matters.
Key Duties and Responsibilities Provide high quality legal advice and representation to clients, manage priorities effectively, and meet deadlines. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of law and practices. Supervise allocated staff to ensure timely and professional conduct of matters. Provide high level service to clients including preparation of court documentation and correspondence. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, presenting legal concepts clearly. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders. Selection Criteria Essential: Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility for a local practising certificate. Extensive experience in relevant fields, particularly in native title and Aboriginal Land Rights. Proven experience in managing complex and sensitive legal cases. Highly developed drafting skills and ability to negotiate effectively. Ability to manage files to meet client needs and cope with competing priorities. Desirable: Litigation experience in the Supreme, Federal, and High Courts. Knowledge of the Territory, its laws, and government workings. Specialist knowledge in Commercial Law relevant to Government. Experience in supervising and developing junior staff. At least 10 years' experience in the practice of law.
