The Principal Indigenous Program Officers (PIPO) for the Metropolitan and South East Queensland regional offices drive employment, small business, and training outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You'll collaborate with Indigenous communities, organisations and industry to identify opportunities that enhance training, apprenticeships, employment pathways and promote Indigenous small business support. On any given day, you'll manage projects, develop initiatives, and provide strategic advice, ensuring Indigenous voices shape regional strategies. Building strong relationships and delivering sustainable results are key. You'll also represent the department in community forums, contributing to policies that support Indigenous employment and training goals aligned with regional objectives.

This is a designated First Nations Identified role. The Principal Indigenous Program Officer (PIPO) roles are critical in fostering and maintaining strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the Metropolitan and South East regions of DESBT. Through strong partnerships with industry, communities, and training providers, the PIPOs will tackle regional employment challenges, addressing skills shortages while promoting apprenticeships and business resilience. Focused on collaboration and innovation, PIPOs will ensure alignment with government priorities while empowering communities with the skills and opportunities to thrive in a changing economy. Their work contributes to sustainable job creation and long-term economic growth, creating lasting impact and building brighter futures for their region.
PIPOs will collaborate closely with various stakeholders, including training organisations, industry partners and local leaders, to develop tailored strategies that align with regional priorities. The roles are heavily focused on advancing career opportunities and improving economic outcomes for First Nations people. By integrating culturally informed approaches into program development, the officers not only enhance professional development opportunities but also strengthen the region's workforce diversity and economic sustainability.
Key responsibilities include engaging with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations, registered training organisations and industry across the region, managing key government projects, providing strategic advice, and representing the department in community and industry forums. The officers will ensure that all initiatives are aligned with government priorities and reflect the specific needs of the Indigenous population in their regions. Through research and community engagement, they also identify opportunities for skills development and economic growth, directly contributing to the department's broader mission of fostering inclusive, diverse, and sustainable regional economies.
