Principal Governance Officer (EL1), Data Integration Services BranchSalary: $113,288 - $130,959 (plus 15.4% superannuation and allowances)Location: Adelaide, Canberra, Geelong, Melbourne, or SydneyPermanent full-time positions; flexible working arrangementsThe Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill the position of Principal Governance Officer (EL1) in the Data Integration Partnerships and Governance (DIPaG) section within the Data Integration Services Branch (DISB).
The successful applicant can work full-time hours from one of our offices located in either Adelaide, Canberra, Geelong, Melbourne, or Sydney, although a hybrid model of working from home and the office applies.
About the role Undertake governance assessments and activities for new data integration proposalsManage strategically important relationships with data custodiansEnsure compliance with governance obligations and stakeholder agreementsProvide secretariat support for high-level strategic fora and stakeholder meetingsProgress the strategic development of ABS data integration policies, processes and proceduresProvide advice on ABS data integration governance arrangements and contribute to broader public sector governance functionsAbout the area Data Integration Services Branch (DISB) builds, maintains, and provides access to integrated data assets for use in policy research, program evaluation, and the collection and production of official statistics.
The Data Integration Partnerships and Governance (DIPaG) is the "front door" of DISB for project researchers and data custodians.
Within DIPaG, the Data Integration Governance team engage with stakeholders to discuss governance requirements and facilitate governance work to ensure all legislative, privacy, and policy protections and approvals are in place.
The Governance team also manages the relationship with data custodians and provides secretariat support to the board which manages the Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA).
What we are looking for (selection criteria) Demonstrated expertise in data governance, ethics, and privacy: Knowledge of data governance principles, including ethics and privacy, and experience applying these to support public trust and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
Ability to discuss governance requirements and facilitate governance work to ensure all legislative, privacy, and policy protections and approvals are in place.
Experience in conducting risk assessments and developing mitigation strategies.
(Essential)Project management: Proven experience in supporting and managing governance activities for data projects, including planning, coordinating, and delivering outcomes within set timeframes.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and ensure successful completion.
(Essential)Leadership and self-management: Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, prioritise tasks, and work independently with minimal supervision.
Proven experience in taking initiative and leading small teams or projects within high-performing environments, including virtual teams.
Strong performance management and capability-building skills.Stakeholder engagement: Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and build productive working relationships.
Experience operationalising data governance arrangements in partnership with data custodians and stakeholders.Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Strong secretariat skills, including the ability to prepare agendas, minutes, and briefing papers, and coordinate and support governance meetings.Critical thinking and reasoning: Well-developed ability to analyse situations, identify problems, and develop innovative solutions.
Strong critical thinking and reasoning skills, including the ability to analyse project and policy documentation and provide insightful recommendations.Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation: Demonstrated commitment to driving continuous improvement and fostering a culture of innovation in processes and practices.
