The Principal Engineer will provide specialised strategic and analytical input to the investigation of emerging power system phenomena.
The role is able to be based out of Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney (2 locations), Adelaide or Perth with hybrid working conditions.
This position will require a balance of technical, strategic, and project leadership capabilities to investigate emerging power system issues, evaluate their potential on power system security and prepare advice to manage them.

About the role AEMO's System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation, supporting AEMO's mission of designing a sustainable energy system that provides affordable, safe and reliable energy for all Australians.
The Future Energy Systems team has accountability for evolving an Engineering Roadmap for the NEM and implementing a number of strategic technical projects to enable the NEM to realise its potential to manage up to 100% penetration of renewables.
Working within the Engineering Strategy team the Principal Engineer will define the technical pathway that underpins the Engineering Roadmap and the Transition Plan for System Security.
Through deep engagement with subject matter experts within AEMO, the energy sector, and the research community, this role seeks to build industry alignment and define the critical engineering activities needed to transition the power system to high levels of renewables.
What you will be doing Provide specialised strategic and analytical input related to the investigation of emerging power system phenomena, transition planning, system planning and operations, and the specification and design of system standards and services.Lead the development of strategic Engineering Roadmap publications and other engagement material, informing their purpose, content, and messaging, as well as supporting their drafting and release.Coordinate and facilitate engagements with stakeholders to help accelerate implementation of the Engineering Roadmap to 100% Renewables.Lead major cross-functional projects covering technical investigations, system planning and operations, specification of technical services, and associated stakeholder engagement.Mentor and coach Future Energy Systems staff, supporting successful project outcomes and staff development.Maintain knowledge of latest international trends in power system planning and design to inform development of the NEM.Prepare high quality documentation, and present at both internal and external forums.Proactively expand AEMO's position and reputation as the trusted technical advisor to Market Bodies, Government Agencies, and other stakeholders.What you will bring to the role Relevant tertiary qualifications (preferably in Electrical Engineering with a power system focus) or equivalent relevant discipline or work experience.Demonstrated ability for strategic decision-making on complex engineering, technical, and regulatory issues.Relevant experience in power system design and operation, with an understanding of electrical power system dynamics, stability concepts, and assessment techniques.Experience defining functional requirements for different power system attributes or augmentations, such as for the procurement of essential system services, the design of special control schemes, or as a foundation for regulatory change.Strong knowledge and understanding of power system and electricity market systems and data, with the aptitude to apply this knowledge to representative problems and situations.Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, specifically relating to electricity transmission, distribution, and generation.Experience with power systems analysis simulation applications, including the interpretation of findings from studies undertaken using such applications.In return some of our benefits to you Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options.Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).About Our Process AEMO values diversity and inclusivity in the workplace, welcoming applications from all backgrounds without regard to age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, parental status, race, religion and our First Nation peoples.
