The Primary Psychiatrist is a full-time or 0.8 EFT position that works closely with the ward Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) to provide consistency in clinical care to the consumers on the ward and achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These include ensuring timely access to beds, the reduction and eventual elimination of restrictive interventions, efficiency in the use of the staffing, financial and other resources as well as managing compliments and complaints.You will be responsible forProviding direct clinical care informed by the latest in evidence base, to a number of consumers with complex mental health problems referred for inpatient assessments and interventions to the Banksia WardProviding clinical governance to the care provided by the multidisciplinary teamProviding training and supervision to junior medical staff from the RANZCP and/or RACP training programs.Participating in clinical quality improvement activities in the department.What you'll achieve:In collaboration with the Nurse Unit Manager, provide oversight of the clinical and operational functions of the ward.Provide effective, coordinated consumer- and family-centred care to Banksia inpatients, with direct clinical responsibility for consumersConduct and lead clinical assessments (including risk assessments), diagnosis, recovery planning, implementation of the plan and discharge of the consumers, completing this through the delegation of tasks to and clinical governance of the ward Fellow, Registrar, JMO, allied health and nursing care coordinators.In conjunction with the sessional Banksia Ward Psychiatrists, effectively oversee the intake and access activities of the Ward Access Coordinator through regular meetingsMaintain systems that coordinate clinical care effectively with the ward sessional psychiatrists and after-hours and covering consultant psychiatristsCollaborate effectively with the NUM to ensure operational and clinical targets are met, and clinical care is of a consistently high standardParticipate in the Clinical Governance and Ward Processes meetings to create and authorise procedures, policies, processes for the clinical care of consumers on the ward.Lead and participate in Quality Activities in the Banksia WardYour skills and experienceRegistration as medical practitioner and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualificationExtensive experience in working in the mental health sector and sound knowledge of the relevant legislation pertaining to Mental Health.Excellent clinical skills and a commitment to professional developmentCompletion of accredited postgraduate training in child and adolescent psychiatryAccreditation as an RANZCP SupervisorAn interest in teaching and research with publications in refereed journals in the field of mental healthIf this sounds like you, click here to view the position description.About RCH Mental HealthRCH Mental Health is a Level 5 tertiary Infant, Child and Family Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service comprised of both community and hospital-based services. This includes an Intake and Assessment Team based at Parkville and three multidisciplinary community-based teams located at Travancore, St Albans and Hoppers Crossing, a HOPE team, Hospital Consultation-Liaison team, the Banksia Ward and the Joey pod, a specialist unit with 3 beds for the care of patients with eating disorders and cooccurring acute mental health problems.The Banksia Ward is a 13-bed facility and is one of four public-funded inpatient adolescent wards in Victoria and provides acute psychiatric care to young people 13-17yo. This includes both urgent and planned admissions for assessment, stabilisation and therapeutic interventions.
