Postdoctoral Researcher/Senior Research OfficerThe Western Australian Aboriginal Child Health Survey (WAACHS) was the largest and most comprehensive survey ever undertaken into the health, wellbeing and development of Western Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
The survey was designed to build the knowledge to develop preventative strategies that promote and maintain the healthy development and the social, emotional, academic and vocational wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.
The Opportunity This role offers an early-career researcher in a relevant field the chance to build experience and advance their career by contributing to a major, complex linked data study focused on Aboriginal health. Collaborating with an experienced team, you will develop skills in research, stakeholder engagement, data dissemination, and knowledge translation within a project aimed at enhancing outcomes for Aboriginal children and families. The study leverages data from the 2000-02 Western Australian Aboriginal Child Health Survey (WAACHS), linked with multiple WA government data sources spanning several decades; this position will provide high-level analytic and research support to the Investigator team.
Key Responsibilities: Understand the research question(s), assess data available and develop an appropriate analysis plan to address the research question(s).Conduct appropriate statistical analysis in a reproducible research framework (descriptive through to complex longitudinal modelling).Identify funding opportunities, assist with new data requests, funding proposals, and potentially leading smaller proposals with support from senior Investigators.Contribute to mentoring, supervising and capacity building of students, working with the Kulunga Aboriginal Unit to create opportunities for Aboriginal students.Actively participate in meetings with Investigators, the research team and external stakeholders to communicate results and provide feedback.Ensure your Line Manager is regularly updated about research progress and issues addressed as required.This is a full-time position for 2 years based at Perth Children's Hospital in Perth, with the possibility of extension.
About You To be successful in this role, you will have a recognised doctoral qualification relevant to the social science or health field, or equivalent experience.
You will also have demonstrated experience in the following:
Strong data management skills, analytical abilities, and experience in the application of a wide range of statistical techniques for research purposes.Experience analysing large and complex data sets (ideally population survey data and linked administrative data).Proficiency with statistical software packages for the manipulation and analysis of data (strong preference for R skills).Experience with Indigenous-specific projects, such as community consultation, research co-design and culturally appropriate research translation.Evidence of publication, conference and stakeholder presentations, relative to opportunity, and the ability to present research findings in a clear and engaging way.Experience with wider research processes including grant applications, human research ethics committees, data requests and reporting.How to Apply If you think that this is the right role and an exciting new challenge for you, please click on 'Apply Now' to navigate to our Career Site to view the Job Description and submit your application.
