About the opportunity We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research (Menzies), part of the College of Health and Medicine. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be involved in NHMRC and MS Australia funded research. This work uses population genomics to identify functional variation under selection at loci associated with multiple sclerosis risk, improving our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the disease. The incumbent will apply statistical and genomics expertise to develop pipelines to detect balancing selection in the major histocompatibility (MHC) region of the genome using large population datasets. This position will offer the opportunity for the incumbent to further develop leadership skills through planning and leading statistical genomics research and support the training and development of junior research staff and students.
What you'll do: Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities. Undertake high-quality research of national and increasingly of international standing. Apply statistical and genomics expertise to develop pipelines to detect balancing selection in the major histocompatibility (MHC) region of the genome using large population datasets. Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University, locally and nationally. Contribute to the internal development of Menzies through involvement in Institute planning activities, active membership of selected Institute committees, and philanthropic and community engagement activities. What we're looking for: A PhD or equivalent in statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, or a related field. Experience in the analysis of genomic data including practical experience with the use of high-performance computing. Demonstrated skills in bioinformatics relevant programming languages such as python, R, or perl. A good record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national recognition. A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally. Salary details Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $121,737 comprising base salary within the range of $80,462 to $104,049 plus 17% superannuation.
