The Fire Research Group (formerly the Centre for Environmental Safety and Risk Engineering, CESARE)is nested within the Emerging Trends in Science, IT and Engineering Discipline. The Group carries out research on the spread of fire and smoke in buildings, tunnels, ships and wildlands, fire extinguishment, and the way structures and materials respond to fires. Our mission is to provide a local, national and international focus for scientific research aimed at mitigating risks from various fire scenarios from structure fires, wildland fires and maritime vessel fires. About the Role: The role will be responsible for conducting experimental and computational fire research and will join the Fire Research Group (FRG). Staff members of the Group are some of the leading CFD-based fire modelling researchers and experimentalists in the world. The role will focus on the experimental and numerical investigations of building, ship, tunnel and/or wildland fire behaviour. This is a full-time (1 FTE) 36.75 hours per week, three year fixed-term position, at a Research Officer Level A Step 8 $100,373 per annum or Research Fellow Level B Step 1 $105,662 Step 3 $113,580 per annum classification (depending on experience), plus 17% superannuation. Duties: An example of the responsibilities or duties for this role may include: Designing appropriate fire research studies after conducting thorough literature reviews and finding research gaps Undertaking experimental and numerical research to develop an understanding of fire growth and propagation as well as materials behaviour in building, tunnel, maritime or wildland settings Publishing high-quality papers as the first-named author in Scimago Q1 journals Preparing research grant proposals for attracting external research funding Co-supervising higher degree research (HDR) students, when appropriate Attending seminars, conferences, workshops and other professional development activities to disseminate the research outcomes. About You: Have knowledge and training equivalent to a PhD qualification in Mechanical / Civil/ Structural/ Chemical / Fire Engineering or Science / or similar. A minimum of one-year postdoctoral experience in a reputed university Excellent research publication record in quality scholarly journals (at least 5 journal papers with first-named authorship and minimum 2 in Q1 journals) Strong written and verbal communication skills. Capacity to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment and contribute to the work of the research team. For a position description, please click here.
