About the opportunity The Biomedical Engineering research group is a collaboration between the Menzies Institute for Medical Research and the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania focused on the application of biomedical engineering to improve neonatal care. The purpose of the position is to support the Biomedical Engineering research group in the development of technologies in relation to two research programs aiming to improve respiratory care for preterm infants - the AUTOPIA program (automation of oxygen for preterm infants), and the Innovative Respiratory Monitoring program.
What you'll do: Contribute effectively to the success of research programs run under the Biomedical Engineering group, including liaising with industry partners and national and international research collaborators, coordinating engineering technical activities, and communicating outcomes of the research activities to relevant industry and community stakeholders.Undertake research tasks associated with the program, including:Investigating new sensing technologies, sensor and acquisition hardware, signal processing, and event detection algorithms for neonatal respiratory monitoring.Developing prototype devices to deliver oxygen in low-resource settings and instrumentation to allow continuous data collection in remote settings for clinical evaluation.Developing control algorithms through simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing to optimise the delivery of oxygen to newborns in both high-resource and low-resource settings.Working with researchers and clinicians to evaluate technologies in clinical settings.Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities.Undertake high-quality research of national and increasingly of international standing, secure external competitive and other funding, publish research findings and contribute to the successful supervision of research higher degree students.Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally with the discipline, relevant interdisciplinary domains, profession, industry and/or wider community.What we're looking for: A PhD in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent in a relevant field.A strong record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national recognition and made worthwhile contributions to the field of Biomedical Engineering.A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with the discipline, profession, industry (where relevant) and wider community.Demonstrated ability and practical experience in one or more of the following research areas: biomedical engineering, mechatronics, electronics, control systems.Demonstrated ability in managing and delivering a biomedical engineering research program.Experience working in a clinical research setting, liaising with clinical staff.Experience conducting engineering research in a clinical setting including development of relevant technical and safety documentation for governance and ethics approvals.What's on Offer?
