Located at the Sydney Brain and Mind Centre, Camperdown.Exciting opportunity to work on dementia genetics as part of the Social Functioning Modelling Team.Base Salary from $109,301 (pro-rata) + 17% superannuation.About the opportunity The School of Medical Sciences is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work as part of the new multidisciplinary Social Functioning Modelling team at the University of Sydney Brain and Mind Centre, led by Dr. Carol Dobson-Stone and Professor Olivier Piguet.
This team consists of 28 senior academics with wide-ranging expertise (e.g., basic science, clinical, neuroimaging, neuropsychology) from across the University of Sydney, who have a research interest in dementia, particularly frontotemporal dementia.
As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will work with Dr. Carol Dobson-Stone at the Brain and Mind Centre to identify and characterise genetic contributors to frontotemporal dementia and related disorders.
You will analyse whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing data from human DNA samples, perform genotype-phenotype analyses, and assess the effect of disease gene variants, using molecular biological and mammalian cell culture techniques.
You will be part of a lab that prioritises collaboration, openness, respect, and encourages innovation.
Opportunities exist to develop further research ideas through the supervision of research undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
Process, analyse, and interpret samples/datasets from large cohorts.Design, conduct, and troubleshoot experiments involving many optimisable variables.Work both independently and collaboratively to meet project objectives.Effectively time manage concurrent projects.Publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.About you The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity.
As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who has:
A PhD (or near completion) in a relevant area, e.g., molecular genetics.Experience with next-generation sequencing, downstream bioinformatic processing, and statistical analysis of data.Experience with cellular models, standard DNA technology, fluorescent light microscopy, and immunocytochemical techniques is highly desirable.A strong research track record, with a proven ability to lead studies to completion as evidenced by lead author publications with demonstrated impact.Strong problem-solving skills paired with the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.Experience in supervising or mentoring others and coordinating team activities is desirable.Sponsorship / work rights for Australia Work Rights: You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment to apply.
