The Position This position is funded by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science, which explores societal impacts of optical frequency combs through advances in physics, materials science, and nanofabrication.
Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) has recently revolutionised seismology by turning telecommunication fiber-optic cables into high-resolution ground motion sensors. This cutting-edge technology bridges the gap between traditional seismic imaging and geological samples, offering a wide range of applications.
The Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Fellow will work on the deployment, acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of large DAS datasets and development of technical advances using optical frequency microcombs. The goal is to expand the capability of our strong field-based seismic imaging research utilising DAS with new technology innovations through the ARC Centre of Excellence COMBS, and therefore understanding of the Earth's structure and evolution.
The Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Fellow will be a member of the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES), which is Australia's leading academic research institution for Earth and Marine Sciences, and ranked 11th in the world for Earth and Marine Sciences (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).
We have a reputation for international leadership and innovation, focused on developing new methods, whether experimental, analytical, or computational. Our research spans the range from solid earth evolution to climate processes, and from 21st-century resources to climate change impact.
The Person To excel in this role you will have a strong track record of independent research in the field of earth sciences, seismology, computational geophysics, physics, or a related area and the ability to articulate and prosecute innovative research. Your ability to lead by example, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, will enable you to foster respectful and productive working relationships with staff, students, and colleagues at all levels within RSES in line with the RSES Culture Statement.
