Base Salary from $122,830 - $127,433 + 17% superannuation (appointment depending on experience and higher degree qualifications)
About the opportunity
Founded in 1930, Sydney School of Public Health is Australia's first and leading school of public health. Each day, our researchers and graduates are tackling global health challenges and striving to improve equity in communities locally and around the world.
A postdoctoral researcher is required to investigate infectious, water and environmental factors that influence human health outcomes including infectious diseases in Fiji. The successful candidate will be required to support the establishment of surveillance systems to monitor infectious diseases of relevance in Fiji (for example typhoid, dengue and leptospirosis and other related infections). The position is funded by the project titled Watershed Interventions of Systems Health (WISH) – Pacific, which is funded under the Australian Government, Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative. The successful candidate will also be involved in other projects in the Pacific.
This is a unique opportunity for a post-doctoral research fellow to contribute to important research focusing on designing methods to improve disease surveillance in the Pacific region. The role will be embedded in the Infectious Diseases, Immunisation and Emergencies (IDIE) Group .
Your key responsibilities will be to:
Work with the research team to understand current research questions and needs.
Collaborate with the project leader and team to develop research protocols, ethics applications and project implementation.
Provide deep technical knowledge and project management support to the project leader and collaborate with academic and research professionals to support the group research.
Actively lead and contribute to research activities, designing research protocols, undertaking critical aspects of research work including formation of analysis and key findings.
Ensure accurate collation of research data, draw insights and analyse, report information from the research undertaken.
Lead and contribute to development of research papers and grants.
Facilitate effective communication and good working relationships amongst key stakeholder groups and team members.
Assist in development of grants and project design.
Travel to Fiji and other parts of Pacific as required (approximately once or twice per year). Domestic travel may also be required.
About you
Essential skills
Have a PhD in Public Health (epidemiology, biostatistics etc) and/or infectious diseases or have equivalent work experience.
Demonstrated experience in public health surveillance and epidemiology.
Competency with Statistical Software STATA and/or R Studio or similar.
Project management experience in a research environment.
Demonstrated experience working across multidisciplinary teams and ability to build effective relations with colleagues and clients.
Scientific writing experience, able to facilitate, review and write for journals and grant applications.
Excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines and achieve required outcomes.
Desirable skills
Competency in mixed method research.
Experience of implementing surveillance or field-based studies in resource-limited settings.
Experience in global public health.
