The ECU School of Nursing and Midwifery's research team is driven by a commitment to inspire excellence in nursing and practice through innovative and strategic research.
Our staff are experts in their field who collaborate with national and international industry partners and universities.
Our current research themes include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Regional, remote, and rural health, and Mental Health (psychological & socioecological determinants).
With an expanding research team, we have the capacity to undertake research across four key areas:   Centre for Research in Aged Care, Acute & Chronic Disease Prevention, Management, & Survivorship in Children, Young People, & Adults, Safety, Quality and Workforce, and Safe, Quality Midwifery Care.
Comorbidity is one of the greatest challenges for age-related health care with over 80% of adults aged 65 years and older having at least one chronic condition and 68% with two or more.
The Resources and Life Strategy Management (REALISM) intervention has been developed based on the Baltes and Baltes Model of Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) (Donnellan et al.
2012; Donnellan and O'Neill, 2014) to determine whether it improves disease associated health outcomes, reablement and independence in older adults with one or more chronic diseases.
The focus of this post-doctoral position is to develop and examine the REALISM intervention in the context of older adults with one or more chronic conditions living at home or in residential long-term care settings.
This project will include initial feasibility and preparation work for defining the REALISM intervention for use in older adults with chronic conditions using intervention mapping steps.
The aim of the REALISM intervention is to provide older adults, their caregivers and healthcare providers with a training program on managing short- and long-term challenges due to chronic conditions (e.g., hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, arthritis, ischaemic heart disease) using a goal setting and attainment plan based on the adaptive strategies selection, optimisation, and compensation.
To be eligible for this position, you require a PhD in a relevant health sciences specialty completed in an English-speaking country.
You have relevant experience in quantitative and/or qualitative analysis, relevant experience working in either age-related and/or in community and primary healthcare settings, knowledge or a keen interest in psychological health and gerontology, a strong teamwork ethic, and good understanding for overall project intellectual sharing and confidentiality.

Benefits & Remuneration This part time, fixed term position attracts remuneration of $113,918 to $134,596 pa (20% pro-rata) plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
