Post-Doctoral Research Fellow – Health System Mapping Full-time, 2.5 years fixed term contract available with Central Clinical School at University of Sydney Opportunity to work on a Sydney Environment Institute research project focused on decarbonising healthcare Base Salary from $122,830 + 17% superannuation Research Focused Academic Level B About the opportunity The Sydney Environment Institute is looking for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to join a new upto 3 years interdisciplinary research project to reduce the carbon footprint of the healthcare system. The successful candidate will have knowledge and skills in health system and process mapping. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Integrated Sustainability Analysis team in the School of Physics and the Central Clinical School.
It aims to: measure the emissions produced by common medical activities and refine emission measurement methodologies for healthcare.
identify the best methods and tools for communicating carbon costs to health consumers, clinicians and hospital/health service executives.
explore the barriers and opportunities to influence environmental change within the healthcare system and, test pathways for policy development aimed at reducing healthcare related emissions at scale.
build partnerships with key stakeholders and policy makers, from health consumers through to federal health policy advisors to effect change.
identify the pathways for translating this research into policy and practice at the local, state and federal levels.
Working as part of the larger team, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will play a key role in this project by providing a systemic mapping of relevant elements of the Australian healthcare system relevant to reducing its systemic carbon emissions with a focus on clinical activity. The scope of the project will be Sydney Local Health District and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital .They will identify key activities to analyse, identify systemic intervention points to drive systemic change, develop and implement interventions to test viability and scalability.
They will work with the Project Director to set their the research agenda and will be responsible for ensuring their research program meets its set objectives. They will support the Chief Investigators, Academic Research Project Director and research professionals. The position will be accountable to the Chief Investigator in the Central Clinical School.
Your key responsibilities will be to: map relevant organisational processes and influences enabling adequate understanding of connection between physical processes and accounting data to support work in carbon footprint quantification . 
map healthcare carbon reduction case studies describing the quantitative methods, systems interventions and impact.
contextualise research on the reduction of carbon footprint of clinical activities within the Australian healthcare system, enabling translation of quantitative outputs into health system interventions. 
establish peer reviewed best practice for influencing decisions to reduce SLHD and Royal RPAH activity carbon footprint in context of patient outcomes and $ cost /benefit identified and prioritised, based on a comprehensive literature review.
design an intervention strategy, with a set of interventions that may be tested during research period. These may include changes to models of care, capital and operating expenditure, policy, education programs, process changes or the proposed development of tools or calculators.
implement and evaluate a sub-set of interventions in the RPAH setting and develop recommendations based on intervention strategy and evaluated interventions.
demonstrate research excellence by publishing original research in high-ranking journals, present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences and collaborate with other researchers at a national and international level.
actively contribute to seeking and securing external funding.
About you PHD-Doctoral qualifications in a relevant field such as sustainability and public health, or equivalent research experience;
demonstrated extensive experience and knowledge in the field of public health;
demonstrated experience in conducting systematic literature reviews and other forms of knowledge synthesis
experience and knowledge of how to identify and implement interventions in healthcare sustainability;
demonstrated publication record in high-ranking journals;
ability to undertake supervision at Masters or PhD level;
ability to contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the Sydney Environment Institute, integrated Sustainability Analysis team in the School of Physics, and the Central Clinical School;
knowledge of the Higher Education Research Data Collection and ethics reporting requirements.
understanding in GHG emissions measurement using various methods including Environmentally extended Input-Output (EEIO) and process-based Life-Cycle Analysis (process-based LCA), with knowledge of their hybridisation in appropriate contexts.
understanding of the Australian healthcare context and functions
