Economic DivisionThe Economic Division in the Economy, Industry and Resilience Group offers fascinating work on issues that matter to the Australian people. Our responsibilities range from advising the Prime Minister and government on macro- and microeconomic policy; housing and competition; taxation, superannuation and workplace relations; fiscal policy and budget processes; and impact analysis. We collaborate with other Commonwealth agencies to analyse and advise on policy and programs, as well as chaperoning Budget and Cabinet processes and the legislative and Parliamentary activities of our line agencies. The Division consists of five Branches – we are seeking talented and motivated Executive Leaders at the EL2 level, to lead teams in the Office of Impact Analysis and the Financial Services, Taxation and Workplace Relations Branch.
What you will doDirector, Office of Impact Analysis, Economic DivisionThe Office of Impact Analysis (OIA) is a central part of policymaking in Australia. Officials from the OIA work across government on significant policy proposals to ensure they are accompanied by quality analysis of the potential impacts. The OIA supports agencies to analyse broader economic, social and distributional impacts of new policy proposals or program changes. The OIA works to support the Prime Minister, Cabinet and other decision-makers by ensuring new policies and programs demonstrate a clear evidence base.
As a director in the OIA, you will have a wide view of policy development across the APS and be deeply involved in major policy proposals coming forward. Key responsibilities include:
Leading a team to exercise sound judgment in determining when to trigger OIA's involvement in the development of a proposal, targeting those proposals with the largest impact on the economy and community.Using strong negotiation and expert policy analysis skills to support agencies to understand and undertake robust impact analysis and provide insights into how to shape and improve the quality of analysis.Engaging and working productively with departments, agencies and regulators to improve policy design and reduce unintended consequences.Representing the OIA with counterparts across Australia and internationally to support Australia's position as a leader in impact analysis.Director, Financial Services, Taxation and Workplace Relations Branch, Economic DivisionThe Financial Services, Taxation and Workplace Relations Branch (FTW) provides advice on key frameworks of Australia's tax system, labour market, and financial system. Our mission is to find solutions to policy and process problems and provide trusted advice on taxation, the financial sector, superannuation, workplace relations, and small business policy.
Key responsibilities for Directors and Senior Advisers within the Branch include:
Engaging deeply with economic, industrial relations, tax or regulatory policy frameworks to form sound judgments on complex policy issues in a time-pressured environment.Leading a high-performing team to reach their potential, build a great culture and deliver to a high standard under pressure.Providing rigorous, detailed and targeted advice to the Prime Minister, other Ministers, ERC and Cabinet committees and senior executives.Building and sustaining strong and productive relationships within and outside of the Department.Instilling a strong sense of policy direction in the team and developing capability to engage strategically and influentially on economic, industrial relations, tax or financial sector policy issues.Working with a high level of autonomy, resolving issues and delivering quality outcomes under broad direction.Communicating effectively and persuasively, including providing verbal briefings to the Secretary, Deputy-Secretary and other senior executives by preparing clear and concise written advice.Director, Workplace Gender Equality, Procurement, and Leadership Team, Women's Economic Policy Branch, Office for WomenThe Women's Economic Policy Branch drives action on the unpaid and paid care, economic equality and security and leadership, representation and decision-making priority areas of working for women. As Director, you will be working closely with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) to progress review recommendations and gender responsive procurement to advance workplace gender equality.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading the ongoing implementation of the 2021 WGEA Review recommendations, focusing on legislative and non-legislative changes to make gains in achieving gender equality for individuals, companies and the economy.Building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including WGEA, Commonwealth departments, industry partners and the women's sector.Providing high quality policy advice to influence and drive gender equality outcomes under working for women.Leading a high performing, inclusive and innovative team, where staff feel valued, supported and have a strong sense of purpose.Director, Policy Team, Gender Based Violence and Social Policy Branch, Office for WomenThe Gender Based Violence and Social Policy Branch drives action on the priority areas under Working for Women, focusing on gender based violence and broader social policy including disability and health. The policy teams provide advice to the Prime Minister and Minister for Women on complex policy, including women's safety, women's health, systems abuse, artificial intelligence and online safety, disability, family law and international gender forums.
Key responsibilities include:
Identifying points of policy influence to drive gender equality outcomes under Working for Women and providing high quality advice across government.Coordinating whole of Government gender equality efforts across portfolios to support strategic advice to Government.Building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including federal and state government agencies, international stakeholders, the academic and women's sectors.Leading a high performing, inclusive and innovative team, where staff feel valued, supported and have a strong sense of purpose.The key duties of the position include:To be successful you need to be able to work in a collaborative team responding to tight time frames and building organisational capability and effectiveness. You will be an experienced leader with strong economic, regulatory and/or women's policy frameworks, excellent influencing and negotiation skills, who is adept at building relationships across the public service, Ministers' offices, industry, academia and the non-government sector. You will have a strong understanding of public policy frameworks, and the ability to engage with complex policy issues and think through broader economic, social and gender implications.
You will also have the confidence and capability to work collegiately as a member of the Department's broader leadership team leading a high performing, inclusive and diverse organisation. EligibilityThe filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975. Where a non-ongoing specified term is offered, this would be for an initial period of up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of two years. A non-ongoing offer may result in conversion to an ongoing offer of employment, however this must occur within 18 months from the opening date of this advertisement.
