Plant Operator

You will need to be reliable and hard-working. You'll work under the direction of senior team members and tradespeople, but you must be self-motivated and take initiative on a work site. You will develop expertise with the machinery you operate as you complete diverse tasks. You'll enjoy planning your work and value safety first.
What is the work environment like? You'll be part of a team that builds and maintains infrastructure along the rail network. You'll work within the rail corridor, alongside trains, or on construction sites.
In most roles you'll wear protective and safety equipment such as a hardhat, gloves, and hi-visibility clothing. Worksites are often exposed to weather so you may need to work in the heat, cold, wind and rain.
You can find work as a plant operator all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. Some are in remote areas.
Some plant operator roles don't need qualifications. However, a certificate in rail infrastructure is required for some roles.
You may also need specialised training and licences to operate forklifts, backhoes, cranes, concrete booms, elevated work platforms, and heavy vehicles.
With extra training and qualifications you may work in tunnels, at heights, and in confined spaces.
You will need a general construction induction card (White Card) to access many work locations.
Your employer will usually provide rail specific safety and induction training.
