Polarons are quasiparticle descriptions of impurities immersed in a quantum medium, which play a pivotal role in understanding quantum materials' properties, such as charge transportation and optical responses. This project aims to make a breakthrough in our fundamental understanding of polarons and polaron interactions by using highly controllable ultracold atomic gases as clean quantum simulators and exploring the nontrivial interplay between many-body and few-body physics in such a setting.
This project will greatly advance our knowledge base in the fields of ultracold atoms and condensed matter physics and will bring new insight to polaron physics by addressing several challenge topics:
Developing novel theoretical tools to describe polarons.Detecting and measuring polaron interactions in ultracold gases.Characterising exotic quantum phases and properties of advanced materials via polaron spectrum.About you To be successful in the role, you will have:
Master or Honours degree.Theoretical background in ultracold quantum gases and condensed matter physics.Demonstrated experience in numerical simulations.A valid Working with Children's Check card (or ability to obtain prior to or upon commencement).A full list of selection criteria is available within the position description.
