Location ProfileOfficer Specialist School is a purpose-built facility servicing the needs of students aged between 5-18, with mild to severe intellectual and associated disabilities in the shires of Cardinia and Casey; two of the fastest growing municipalities in Melbourne. The school opened in 2014 and the student population has increased rapidly each year, requiring the recruitment of new staff and additions to our buildings and facilities.
School staff work in transdisciplinary teams that include teaching staff, allied health practitioners and education support staff to cater for the diverse range of student abilities and needs. Our teaming approach also provides opportunities for staff to learn from one another and share expertise.

Selection CriteriaDemonstrated capacity to undertake routine and specialised teacher assistant support tasks across a range of work areas within a Special School environment.Demonstrated capacity to work co-operatively and communicate effectively within a team environment with a wide range of individuals including teachers, other support staff, therapists, parents and students.Demonstrated understanding of the principles of effective behaviour management for students with an intellectual disability who might exhibit severe challenging behaviours.Demonstrated experience and/or willingness to give physical assistance with personal care/self-care responsibilities.Demonstrated understanding of intellectual disability and its impact on learning.RoleAn education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction.
A role at this range may include:
Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes.Assisting teachers within an educational program by undertaking specific support tasks.Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles.Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles.ResponsibilitiesProvides routine support for teachers including assisting with planning of student routines.Participate in team meetings.Supports communication between teachers and parents.Provides specialised communication support for students and teachers in areas such as AUSLAN and braille/use of AAC.Assist with the communication between students and teachers, particularly the interpretation of instructions.Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of programs and evaluation of individual student involvement and achievement.Provides basic physical care and wellbeing support for students such as toileting, meals, and lifting.Assist with toileting, meals and lifting to students requiring special care where required.Assist with the supervision of pupils in various settings as directed.Ensure work areas and materials, equipment and appliances are maintained in a clean and ready to use condition.Provide medical intervention support that involves a specific medical condition approved by the Department.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
