Permanent Veterinarian and Emergency Clinician - Queensland Type: Small Animal
Location: Townsville, Queensland
Practice: This Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a controlled entity of a local University, and while it works closely with the Uni, it has its own Board of Directors and operates independently. It is located on campus, across the road from the Veterinary Sciences Faculty. It is established to provide clinical training to 5th-year veterinary students. Within the same building, they have five disciplines - General Practice, Emergency & Critical Care and Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Anaesthesia (Referral Services). They employ approx. 85-90 employees and locum vets across these disciplines. 
Role: This position provides excellence in general practice veterinary clinical services to small animals and excellence in teaching to final-year veterinary students. The role promotes and maintains animal health by diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries, attending to traumatic injuries and critical illnesses, determining the best treatment, and advising and building relationships with clients in a general practice setting. The incumbent of the role provides hands-on teaching, tutoring, guidance, and demonstration to students. 
Duties: Your key tasks and responsibilities will include
Patients - Diagnosing and treating the full range of animal diseases and injuriesSurgery and Anaesthesia - Perform dental, ophthalmic, sterilisation, and other routine surgical procedures. Consultations: Build productive relationships with clients and patientsDiagnostics: Safely obtain high-quality diagnostic images that are appropriate to the treatment needs.Infection Control: Ensure appropriate clinical hygiene and sterility procedures in managing clinical casesCommunication (Verbal and Written): Constantly aim to communicate professionally with colleagues and stakeholders around matters of patient care and day-to-day hospital functions.Mentorship: Provide clinical teaching, mentoring, and supportOther: Perform other duties consistent with the scope of this position as reasonably requiredHours: It is a 38-hour week worked over a monthly roster. Hours are typically 3 long shifts per week, every other weekend off, with a combination of days, nights, and swing shifts.
Qualifications, Licenses, and Memberships: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or registerable equivalentRadiological License with Queensland HealthRecover CPR training, or willingness to obtainCertificate IV Trainer & Assessor or other relevant tertiary qualifications in teachingSkills and Experience Relevant general practice and/or emergency veterinary experience as considered necessary for the role/teamContemporary knowledge of best practice treatment and effects of therapies and medicineExperience conducting a wide range of routine surgeries, vaccinations, and health checksProven ability to assess patients and apply appropriate treatment and care to patientsGeneral awareness of appropriate surgical etiquette and practicesAbility to work under pressure in a fast-paced veterinary environmentWell-developed organisational skills, with the ability to task efficiently and communicate effectively while under pressureExperienced in low-stress animal handling techniquesPrevious exposure to emergency and clinical care and/or working in a referral environmentPrevious exposure to case management involving physical trauma, shock, respiratory problems, cardiac problems, neurological issues, and other severe injuries requiring immediate and intensive carePerson Specification: Able to perform well under pressure and in stressful situationsExcellent relationship-building skills and ability to quickly develop rapport with clients and teamsEncouraging, courteous, and non-judgemental interactions with peers and other team membersEnthusiastic with a positive attitude to work, management, and challengesAbility to task effectively between clinical practice and student teachingCompassionate and caring approach to animals and their ownersResilient and able to effectively manage the pressures of a fast-paced environmentContinuing professional development activities and commitment to lifelong learningSalary: This will depend on the skills and experience that the individual brings to the role, as a guide an experienced ECC Clinician – i.e. contemporary GP vet experience including skills in surgery and anaesthesia, have either done some work in ECC or has been responsible for solo emergency after hours $123,000 – $133,000 p/a
The annualised salary covers them for working irregular hours and includes up to 8 reasonable additional hours per fortnight (given the nature of ECC is that you can't walk out of the door mid-emergency), and if the hours exceed that per fortnight they are paid at their hourly equivalent rate. 11% superannuation $2500 CPD p.a. 5 weeks annual leave 1 week paid study leave p.a Ref: JN -052024-31201
