Permanent Emergency & Critical Care Senior Clinician - Queensland Type: Small Animal
Location: Townsville, Queensland
Practice: This Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a controlled entity of a local University, and while it works closely with the Uni, it has its own Board of Directors and operates independently. It is located on campus, across the road from the Veterinary Sciences Faculty. It is established to provide clinical training to 5th-year veterinary students. Within the same building, they have five disciplines - General Practice, Emergency & Critical Care and Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Anaesthesia (Referral Services). They employ approx. 85-90 employees and locum vets across these disciplines. 
Role: This position provides excellence in Veterinary emergency and critical care medicine and surgery for small animals. The role promotes and maintains animal health by diagnosing and managing diseases, traumatic injuries, and critical illnesses, performing and supervising medical and surgical treatments and procedures, and providing information and advice to clients, internal veterinarians, and external referral veterinarians. The role will also have a strong focus on teaching students, nurses, and less experienced veterinarians. 
Duties: The General Principles of the role include
The role will be flexible and evolving as the employee develops further skills and experience. This will be designed and documented through regular review and discussion.You will work within the protocols of the Vet hospital and contribute to continual improvement and refining of appropriate protocols and practices that support the hospital's mission and values. You will encourage and act in ways that support and help build a collegiate, supportive, and rewarding learning environment for themselves and others. Clinical Veterinary Work - Including management dutiesClinical Veterinary Teaching - Including providing clinical teaching, mentoring, support, marking, and assessment of veterinary students in the teaching hospital via delivery of clinical practice, group tutoring, and individual one-on-one sessions (as required) and remediation of students if necessary. Hours: It is a 38-hour week worked over a monthly roster. Hours are typically 3 long shifts per week, every other weekend off, with a combination of days, nights, and swing shifts.
Qualifications, Licenses, and Memberships: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or equivalent registerable degreeCurrent registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of QLDMANZCVS (ECC)Radiological License with Queensland HealthQFever Immunization Senior First Aid Certificate (or ability to acquire)Recover CPR training, or willingness to obtain Skills and Experience Extensive ECC veterinary experience is considered necessary for the role and in accordance with the JCU Vet ECC Veterinarian Competency ListSignificant exposure to physical trauma, shock, respiratory problems, cardiac problems, neurological issues, and other illnesses requiring immediate and intensive care Advanced knowledge of best-practice surgical and anaesthesia procedures High-level diagnostic, problem-solving, and decision-making skills Well-developed organisational skills, with the ability to multi-task efficientlyExperienced in low-stress animal handling techniquesSound computer and administrative skills A strong interest in and aptitude for teaching emergency and critical care Experience in ECC veterinary teaching in the context of authentic clinical service deliveryPerson Specification: Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to quickly develop rapport with clients and teamsEncouraging, courteous, and non-judgmental interactions with peers and other team members Enthusiastic with a positive attitude to work, management, and challenges Ability to multi-task effectively between clinical practice and student teaching Compassionate and caring approach to animals and their owners Resilient and able to effectively manage the pressures of a fast-paced environmentContinuing professional development activities and commitment to lifelong learning Salary: This will depend on the skills and experience that the individual brings to the role, as a guide an Experienced ECC Clinician – i.e. 6-10 years as a dedicated ECC vet, ability to work solo in an emergency, has their ECC membership and guides and mentors other more junior ECC vets and interns $150,000 – $170,000 salary
The annualised salary covers them for working irregular hours and includes up to 8 reasonable additional hours per fortnight (given the nature of ECC is that you can't walk out of the door mid-emergency), and if the hours exceed that per fortnight they are paid at their hourly equivalent rate. 11% superannuation $2500 CPD p.a. 5 weeks annual leave 1 week paid study leave p.a Ref: JN -052024-31202
