The Opportunity
Austal is seeking a proactive People and Culture Officer to join our team in Cairns. Reporting to the People and Culture Advisor, this role will support the full scope of HR operations, including recruitment, onboarding, compliance management, and employee relations.
This is an ideal role for someone looking to broaden their HR expertise with hands-on experience in a well-supported environment.
Key Responsibilities
Facilitate interviews and maintain recruitment workflows to ensure a smooth hiring process.
Draft and issue contracts of employment, employment variations, and internal employee correspondence.
Maintain and update employee records and HR databases, including digital copies of employee files.
Assist in the end-to-end HR process, including employee relations, compliance, and offboarding tasks.
Support generalist HR activity.
Build trusted relationships within our business leaders to guide, foster, and enhance employee relations.
Guide and support internal managers on employee relations matters to contribute to a constructive culture of consistency and fairness.
Participate in the implementation of HR initiatives with our team to add to a bigger picture of employee engagement and culture.
Assist with HR-related research and continuous improvement.
About You
Proven expertise across all areas of Human Resources including recruitment and performance management.
Strong knowledge of relevant HR legislation, awards, agreements, and policies.
Ability to research, analyze, and provide strategic HR recommendations.
Diploma in Human Resources or related field.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Basic MS Office skills (Word/Excel).
Awareness of employment law fundamentals and employment compliance, including NES, awards, employment contracts, EEO, OHS basics, record keeping, and confidentiality obligations.
