About the boardThe Minister for Health invites applications for Deputy Chairperson and Member roles on the Patient Review Panel The Patient Review Panel (the Panel) is an independent tribunal established under the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008 (the ART Act).
The Panel determines complex and sensitive applications for assisted reproductive treatment.
This includes applications for:
surrogacy arrangementsposthumous use of gametes and embryostreatment where a registered ART provider or doctor is concerned about the risk of abuse or neglect of a child that may be born as a result of the treatmenttreatment where the applicant does not meet the criteria for treatment set out in section 10(2) and s15(1)(b)) of the ART Actthe use of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis for the purpose of sex selectionapplications for extended storage periods of gametes and embryos and removal of embryos from storage.Applications are sought for 3 deputy chairperson roles and approximately 7-8 member roles.
The Panel's deputy chairpersons and members are appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister for Health for a period of up to 3 years.
The Panel's deputy chairpersons play a key role in supporting the chairperson and may, at times, be called upon to act as chairperson when the chairperson is unavailable or otherwise unable to complete their duties.
Deputy chairperson/s meet regularly with the chairperson and Panel staff to discuss operational issues and any other arising matters.
As a minimum, a deputy chairperson and member can expect to sit on approximately 8-10 half day hearings per year and attend other meetings as required.
Each half day hearing is approximately four hours.
Members should allow 2-3 hours reading/preparation time for each hearing.
The workload can vary, and it is preferable that a member has some flexibility to manage the workload associated with the role.
Who we're looking forThe Panel requires members with a range of skills and expertise in areas relevant to the functions of the Panel.
Individuals with skills or expertise in child protection, clinical medicine, obstetrics, clinical psychology, psychiatry or social work, law, ART (not currently working in the field), ethics, or genetics, or who have lived experience in relation to ART including IVF, surrogacy and donor conception/treatment, or who have held public appointments or community leadership roles, are particularly encouraged to apply.
It is preferable for a deputy chairperson to have experience in attending or conducting hearings of a statutory panel or tribunal.
The deputy chairperson may also have skills, expertise and experience in one or more other areas relevant to the functions of the Panel indicated above.

In addressing the key selection criteria, you are encouraged to detail your lived experience, professional experience, and other demonstrable skill sets and knowledge.
The selection and remuneration of appointees is in accordance with the Appointment and Remuneration Guidelines.
The guidelines state that an individual should hold no more than 3 positions on public boards at any one time.
