The Role
Our client is seeking a skilled developer to contribute to COSPPac products by designing and implementing advanced data systems.
The developer will be responsible for delivering two critical pieces of technology infrastructure:
Real-Time Data Display (RTDD): Develop a modern replacement for the existing RTDD system, which has been operational since 2014.
The new RTDD will provide near real-time sea level and weather information at one-minute intervals.
The system must feature an intuitive, user-friendly interface optimised for low-bandwidth environments, ensuring accessibility for users across Pacific Island nations.CliDE Sea Level Data Integration: Support the implementation of a robust data ingestion and processing pipeline to integrate near real-time sea level station data into the CliDE system.
This includes facilitating the quality-controlled ingest of data that is made available monthly through the Tides Database.The role involves web and back-end development adhering to the latest standards, focusing on simplicity, security, and scalability.
The successful candidate will work closely with scientists and technical teams to ensure the systems meet user requirements and align with the broader goals of COSPPac.
Development of the RTDD would ideally take place first, followed by supporting CliDE ingest.
Key Accountabilities Real-Time Data Display Development Design and develop a new Real-Time Data Display (RTDD) system to replace the existing platform.Ensure the RTDD provides near real-time sea level information, weather data, and predictions from Pacific Sea level stations.Incorporate user-friendly, intuitive design principles tailored to low-bandwidth environments.Develop and maintain robust back-end systems for data ingestion, management, and display.Integrate visual and interactive components to enhance user engagement with data products.CliDE Integration and Development Support processes for ingesting sea level data into the CliDE system.Support the integration of near real-time data from sea level stations and quality-controlled data from the Tides Database.Collaborate with technical teams to ensure seamless data flow and compatibility with existing systems.Technical Excellence Adhere to modern web development standards, ensuring secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.Apply best practices in software development, including automated testing, code documentation, and version control using tools like Git.Utilise containerisation (e.g., Docker) and cloud-based infrastructure (e.g., AWS) to ensure efficient deployment and scalability.Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement Work closely with COSPPac scientists, technical staff, and Pacific partner organisations to refine requirements and deliver tailored solutions.Ensure regular communication with project stakeholders to provide updates on progress and resolve technical challenges.Provide high-quality internal documentation to support knowledge sharing and system longevity.User-Centric Design and Accessibility Optimise system performance for bandwidth-limited environments to ensure accessibility for all users in the Pacific region.Incorporate feedback from end-users and stakeholders to iteratively improve system usability and functionality.Key skills: Technical Expertise Proven experience in developing scientific software using Open Source and Commercial technologies, particularly:Linux, bash, and shell tools.Python (including libraries such as Numpy, Pandas, Xarray, Fiona, and Shapely).Web development languages and frameworks: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (including libraries such as Leaflet).Experience with data formats relevant to climate, weather, and sea level applications, including NetCDF and HDF5.Cloud Computing and Containerisation Demonstrated expertise in deploying and managing software on Amazon Web Services (AWS).Familiarity with containerisation technologies such as Docker.Software Development Practices Proficient in the full software development lifecycle, including coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).Ability to create, package, and test Python modules for efficient software distribution.Strong emphasis on developing secure, scalable, and maintainable code.User-Centric Development Demonstrated ability to design user interfaces tailored to low-bandwidth environments and diverse user needs.Experience optimising systems for accessibility and usability in resource-constrained settings.Communication and Collaboration Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders, including Pacific partner organisations, international research bodies, and the broader COSPPac team.Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary teams and coordinating with non-technical stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.Project and Time Management Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.Due to the nature of this role, this job is open to Australian Citizens only; you must be able to obtain Baseline security clearance.
