Position: EL 1 - $120,290 - $129,379 per annum plus superannuation Office: Office of Supervising Scientist Location: Darwin, NT Who we are
The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) is a specialist scientific area within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth).
We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining.

We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process, and develop standards and practices for environmental protection.

The Science Facilitation Team provides high quality business, operational, and governance support to the OSS, including WHS and the coordination of our statutory committees.
The Job Manage the risk-based Work, Health and Safety (WHS) management system in line with the general requirements of AS4801/ISO18001 to identify and mitigate hazards associated with the work of the OSS including office, field, and laboratory environments. Supervise the activities of the Supervising Scientist Facilities area including management of fleet vehicles, plant, equipment, buildings, and related infrastructure (e.g.
IT and physical security). Provide assistance in the management of hazards associated with laboratory and office-based work, field work, use of chemicals, and radiation safety. Provide regular advice and reports to the Departmental and Divisional WHS Committee and senior management on WHS related issues. Actively promote the OSS's 'Safety First' philosophy and raise awareness of staff's rights and obligations in relation to WHS in the workplace. Liaise with key OSS staff to ensure the WHS management system is integrated with other systems to the greatest extent possible. What we are looking for Knowledge and experience A sound knowledge of, and experience in, the development, implementation, and management of WHS management systems. Experience in managing plant, equipment, buildings, and related infrastructure (e.g., IT and physical security) in the context of maintaining the highest standards of WHS in the workplace. Demonstrated knowledge of the hazards associated with laboratory and office-based work and field work in remote areas of Northern Australia. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in management of hazardous chemicals and/or radiation safety. Skills and capabilities Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to supervise staff, interact with a wide variety of people, and to work through difficult and emotive issues associated with change management. Ability to lead delivery of high-quality work to short timeframes, manage competing priorities, and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Leadership and management skills, including providing a sense of purpose and direction to others through periods of change, engaging with risk, and uncertainty. Sound judgement, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. The successful applicant must: Hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification. Hold and maintain a current manual driver's licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle. Eligibility and other requirements Citizenship: To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen. Security Clearance: This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance.
You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level. Pre-employment Check: Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process.
This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
