Nutrition Educator (Darwin)Job DescriptionIn conjunction with other members of the education and health promotion team:Impart knowledge and understanding of diabetes, cardiac and related conditions management principles to people with the condition, their family or support network to improve their self-care management skills through education, guidance and support.Act as a resource person to other health professionals and participate in educational programs.Support the development of educational resources appropriate for Northern Territory clients and health professionals.Work with the Health Promotions Manager developing and delivering health promotion and primary prevention programs.All performance and conduct of duties shall be carried out in accordance with the principles of best practice, and in line with Healthy Living NT's Guiding Values and objectives identified in Healthy Living NT Strategic Plan.Responsible to the Education Manager.Salary to the value of $85,000 - $90,000 with generous salary packing available.Specific AccountabilitiesTo provide/participate in individual and group education and counselling sessions for people with diabetes and their families or support network, in a culturally appropriate environment.To provide/participate in individual and group education and counselling sessions for people with cardiac conditions and their families or support network, in a culturally appropriate environment.To liaise with referring Medical Officers and other health professionals including Aboriginal Medical Services, hospitals, and rural and remote clinic staff.Contribute, support and assist in the production of two quarterly publications; one targeting consumers and the other targeting health professionals. Scientific literature is adapted to suit a wide audience from the general public to health professionals including those in rural and remote communities.Support and assist with the development, promotion, implementation and evaluation of educational programs, in-services and resource needs of health professionals to increase their diabetes and cardiac dietary education knowledge, skills and service delivery. Act as a consultant/adviser on diabetes and cardiac conditions dietary management principles to health professionals and others involved in the care of persons with diabetes and or cardiac conditions.Assist the education team and relevant service providers in the identification of existing suitable literature and other educational resources required for the program. Where existing resources are unsuitable or non-existent explore the development and production of resources that are culturally appropriate for all identified client groups.Participate and assist the Education team to identify/implement/evaluate and revise education programs in accordance with best practice and evidence-based standards.Ensure all documentation is professionally presented and complete, and in accordance with Healthy Living NT policy/scientific principles.Participate in health promotion and primary prevention initiatives.Maintain, develop and prepare records for the collection of meaningful statistics which reflect an accurate profile of the position and the education service, as required for service review and evaluation. High-level written reports are presented.Establish, maintain and promote effective lines of communication within the organisation, with affiliated health professionals and the community to achieve goals and good public relations.Identify and participate where appropriate in national nutrition-related seminars and functions relevant to diabetes and cardiac conditions with reference to highlighting and promoting NT needs.Participate in the evaluation of products, literature and services that may be of benefit or interest to people with diabetes and cardiac conditions, their families and health care providers.Accountable for own nutrition practice and the maintenance of own ongoing education in relation to diabetes management and education, cardiac rehabilitation, self-management, stages of behaviour change and adult education.To practice in accordance with legislation and common law, within the Australian Dietary Guidelines.Other duties as directed from time to time by the Manager, Education Services &/or CEO.Please note that the responsibilities outlined in this position description are not exhaustive, and only an indication of the work of the role. Healthy Living NT can direct you to carry out duties which it considers are within your level of skill, competence and training.This position is based in Darwin and may be required to:Occasionally work non-standard hours.Undertake travel and service delivery throughout the NT, including driving where necessary.Some limited interstate travel.It is a requirement of employment with Healthy Living NT that all health professionals obtain and maintain:a satisfactory Police Criminal check.a Working with Children check (Ochre card).a Northern Territory Driver's License.All performance and conduct of duties shall be carried out in accordance with the principles of best practice, and in line with Healthy Living NT's Guiding Values and objectives identified in Healthy Living NT's Strategic Plan.Selection CriteriaEssentialAppropriate Degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).Attained APD status.NT Driver's License (or eligible to obtain).A well-developed understanding of adult education learning principles, presentation skills, stages of behaviour change and group education.Ability to participate in planning, implementing and evaluating education programs, resource development and health promotion activities.Ability to work independently, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively participate as a member of a small multidisciplinary team within a cross-cultural environment.Skills with computer applications and a commitment to using information technology for communication, data collection, evaluation and resource development.Awareness of cultural issues and their impact on clinical practice.Commitment to continual updating and development of own professional knowledge and expertise.Highly DesirableExtensive experience in diabetes management in the community.Possess high motivation, strong initiative and time management skills.Understanding of the principles of quality management and demonstrated commitment to the process of continuous review and quality improvement.Knowledge and proven ability to implement Continuous Quality improvement strategies and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety and Equal Employment Opportunity standards.Demonstrated analytical and report writing skills.All applications are required to address the selection criteria attached and provide contact details of 3 referees with your CV.Applications are to be emailed to:Chrissie InglisEducation ****** close 8 am Monday 4 November 2024.#J-18808-Ljbffr
