Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? If you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for Nuclear Security Officers (NSO).
The NSO ensures the safety and security of employees, visitors, and contractors by monitoring the site and proactively preventing or reacting to hazards, emergencies and threats using appropriate methods, tools (including Use of Force), techniques, skills, and training.
The NSO rapidly, efficiently, and safely responds to security events by carrying out access control, intervention, and investigation duties under normal, emergency, and hazardous conditions necessary to safeguard life and property.
The NSO operates within both a regulatory and a business framework, meeting both Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) objectives and standards.

Performing work associated with the physical protection of personnel, property, and special nuclear materials at WL Laboratories in accordance with licensing requirements as set out by the CNSC.
Implementing policies and procedures for the WL site in accordance with CNSC physical security regulations and CNL company policies.
Participating and maintaining up-to-date, all safety and operational training offered through the company.
Assuming personal responsibility and is accountable for maintaining current skills by attending all training required by the site, viewing assigned videos, reading articles, and participating in seminars as required.
Working a variety of shifts, which consist of a continuous rotating shift schedule that involves working nights, weekends, holidays, and shifts up to twelve (12) hours in duration.
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, kneeling, stooping, use of both hands, manual dexterity, visual acuity, color vision, lifting weights over 50 lbs., climbing ladders, crouching, pulling, balancing, pushing, hearing, crawling, reaching, depth perception/night vision.
Sharing learned knowledge and skills with peers.
Identifying and reporting any real or potential safety hazards; wearing all safety equipment related to your position and participating in all safety training offered through the facility.
Adhering to Workplace Safety and health procedures, WHIMIS program; keeping current with practices; working in a prudent and safe manner and informing other employees if they are using unsafe work practices or equipment.
Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
Performing other duties as assigned by the manager.
What we are looking for: Someone who had the ability to: Be observant, have a good memory, be willing to undertake training, and be able to work independently without direct supervision and in a team environment.
Must be able to obtain/maintain Government of Canada Level 2 – Secret Security Clearance.
Ability to acquire/maintain knowledge and operating skills for various computer hardware and software systems/functions/controls that form part of or relate to physical security at WL-CNL.
Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.
Must be willing/able to work a continuous rotating shift schedule that involves working nights, weekends, holidays, and shifts up to twelve (12) hours in duration.
Must possess/retain a valid "Class 4" Province of Manitoba Driver's License.
Must successfully complete the ESO Use of Force Training Program and re-qualify annually thereafter.
Must successfully pass the mandatory CNSC medical evaluation indicating physical and mental ability to carry out the duties and responsibilities of a Nuclear Security Officer as detailed in the Nuclear Security Regulations.
Must be able to meet these standards annually.
Must possess, or be able to obtain, a working knowledge of the Off Shift Radiation Protection Procedures.
Must have or be able to obtain WHMIS certification.
Must have or be able to obtain CNL Respirator Fit Test Certification.
Must have or develop a detailed knowledge of all applicable company Policies & Procedures.
Must maintain a current understanding and familiarization with departmental policies, forms, memos, procedures, and special requests.
Must have or develop a working knowledge of the CNSC Nuclear Security Regulations.
Must have or develop a working knowledge of job-related software and email to complete reports and effectively communicate within the department and the company.
Must have or develop Interpersonal Skills required to interact with others to foster mutual understanding, productivity, and organizational advancement, which involves understanding, cooperativeness, diplomacy, sociability, and conflict management.
Must have or develop the ability to get along with others in a team environment.
Must have or develop confidence and ability to make decisions, render judgements, take action or commit oneself without delay, especially related to emergent responses.
Must be able to demonstrate rapid, and reasonable, decision-making abilities and work independently when required.
Must possess, or be able to obtain, a Standard First Aid Certification, Level C CPR Certification.
Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Must have the ability to accurately document and report on occurrences related to the site and/or personnel on any issues relating to the scope of security services.
Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain a flow of work and accuracy of records.
Must be punctual, dependable and safety-minded.
Exceptional organizational skills, ability to prioritize and time management is required.
The ability to understand detailed information is essential.
Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one's work.
Conscientious about accuracy.
Ability to adapt to a changing environment and respond with initiative.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all organizational levels and with external stakeholders.
Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs and emergent responses.
Must be in good physical and mental health to perform the position's duties.
Must possess normal physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work that involves bending, lifting and mobility.
Must be capable of wearing and working in protective clothing and using equipment as required.
Potential exposure to chemicals, toxins, gases, fire, loud noise, biological hazards, and/or radiation.
Make decisions under dangerous and physically demanding conditions, relying on judgement, objectivity, adaptability, experience, and training.
Experience · Previous law enforcement, police, or military experience would be considered an asset.
Education · Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
Security Eligibility Requirement · Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security".
Working Conditions: May be required to work overtime.
Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions (extreme temperatures, dry, humid and/or dusty air, precipitation, brightness and darkness.
