The key duties of the position include:The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is a historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting-edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia's economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

We are seeking APS 6 Nuclear Engineers to join the Chief Engineer Nuclear Directorate within the Design Control Branch. These roles will be exercising delegated Technical Authority for the design, development, maintenance, and operation of the nuclear-powered submarine fleet. Applications are open to Engineering and Applied Science Professionals from applicable industries.

Safety and OperationsNuclear SystemsReactor Pressure Vessel & CoreRadiological ControlsNuclear Field OfficeSecondary SystemsDecommissioning and DisposalAustralia is leveraging the technology, capability, and design expertise from the UK and US. These roles will be involved in developing and defining the ASA's Design Control capability for Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants to cover the full life-cycle of design, construction, operation, maintenance, installations and infrastructure, and decommissioning within the Australian context.

APS 6 Nuclear Engineer may include:
Perform critical and complex engineering activities and provide advice under broad direction.Apply engineering knowledge and experience to identify issues and uncertainties and take these into account in planning, decision making and priority setting.Assess technical artefacts and design packages including scoping, planning, and reviewing, to maintain design intent through life.Execute any Safety Delegations that may be assigned through monitoring and ensuring safety aspects have been considered and addressed.Participate in the due process system for relevant Reactor Plant Safety Case (RPSC) changes, providing system research and reporting on results.Assist the management of Authorisation to Operate within the scope of their delegation.Research and recommend/endorse permissions to operate (i.e., Control Certificates).Provide research and reports at the appropriate level for System Upkeep, Upgrade and Update.Research, review, and report on alternatives and impacts regarding Concessions & Departure from Design Intent (DDIN) for relevant systems.Assist development of relevant operating documentation.Support other duties as assigned.Following initial training, you will undertake embedment in technical organisations in the United States of America (USA) or the United Kingdom (UK), for a period of 2 to 3 years, to gain and develop suitable qualifications, experience, and specific knowledge on nuclear-powered submarine technologies.
About our TeamThe Chief Engineer Nuclear Directorate within the Design Control Branch is responsible for the integrity and safety of the naval reactor plant ensured through the application of requisite knowledge to approve and maintain the design intent through life.

As a member of the Chief Engineer Nuclear Directorate, you will continue to grow your subject matter expertise, be accountable for exercising any assigned authorities and Technical Regulatory Authority delegations and providing objective quality evidence.

Security Clearance:
Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at "Negative Vetting Level 2".
Mandatory Qualifications:
Our Engineering roles require a Bachelor of Engineering from an Australian institution, or a qualification gained elsewhere, that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia. These positions may require the individual to be able to meet the requirements of Chartered Professional Engineer (Engineers Australia), Registered Professional Engineer (Professionals Australia) or Fellow/Member of Royal Institution of Naval Architects or demonstrate the ability to obtain such status within 12 months.
