Details of the offer

Apply your commitment to good governance and transparency to the leading organisation supporting NSW veterans and their families.Be part of a respected and progressive not-for-profit organisationBring your strong governance and board experienceContribute to implementing a once-in-a-lifetime Strategic PlanThe organisation For over 100 years, RSL NSW has been respecting, supporting, and remembering veterans and their families. The not-for-profit organisation was formed in 1917 and currently has over 28,000 members attached to 313 sub-Branches throughout New South Wales. Incorporated under an NSW Act of Parliament, RSL NSW's vision is that by 2026 every veteran in NSW knows what the RSL stands for, what it does, and wants to be involved as a member.
Based in the heart of the Sydney CBD, the RSL NSW head office boasts a small team of dynamic professionals and strong governance processes. The organisation's 2021-26 Strategic Plan was created in consultation with members and the wider veteran community, and key milestones have already been achieved.
The role To further position itself to deliver on the vision and to replace an outgoing independent director, the organisation seeks an independent non-executive director, who is not a member of RSL NSW, to be appointed to the Board. Previous board experience and a commitment to good governance and transparency are essential. No defense background necessary.
To complement skills that already exist on the Board, RSL NSW is particularly looking for an experienced Independent Director who will bring the following:
• Executive level in finance roles (preferably CFO, partner, or equivalent level) with ideally some professional experience within the property and/or development sector, OR
• Executive-level experience in public policy or advocacy (the areas of veterans' services, aged care or mental health would be an advantage); and
In addition to the above, experience in corporate communications/marketing, and fundraising would also be considered favourably (but is not essential).
Active members and graduates of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) or Governance Institute will be highly regarded.
The Independent Director will have a genuine interest and commitment to RSL NSW's vision and purpose. Additionally, it is expected that they will occasionally attend public functions and advocate for RSL NSW. A candidate who can bring an established reputation and networks within government and the wider business community, and some background within a member-based or federated organisational environment, would also be advantageous.
It is estimated that the time you need to dedicate to the Independent Director Role is approximately 10 – 15 hours per month. The role is not remunerated. Board and Committee meetings alternate between in-person meetings at ANZAC House in the Sydney CBD, or online. The RSL NSW Board meets approximately six times yearly and holds an annual strategy day. All Board members are expected to participate in at least one Board Committee, with quarterly meetings.
