IntroductionThe BBC News website is one of the world's largest and most popular news sites, with mobile and desktop editions for the UK and International audiences, as well as US and Asia editions, plus UK-facing and International-facing apps.
We are expanding our digital news operation in Sydney recruiting digital journalists to cover international and UK news in text and video.
This operation will perform a crucial role in building the global audiences coming to the BBC as well as setting up our digital coverage to best serve and help grow the early morning UK audience coming to the site.
The team will take over coverage from digital output teams in the UK and US - to drive the biggest global stories as they happen and set up our UK morning offer seven days a week.
It will work closely with teams working in London, Washington DC and Singapore and work alongside a small team of journalists already based in Sydney covering Australian news.
The team will be expected to run live pages on the biggest moving stories, produce news stories and sharp angles in text and video, curate different editions of the website and the BBC News app and work with BBC correspondents and reporters around the world to bring our reporting to millions of people.
Main ResponsibilitiesThe News Editor for Digital Output, based in Sydney, will lead a multi-platform team of journalists to deliver high-impact digital news every day in text and video covering global and UK agendas.
The role will involve overseeing daily news coverage across our digital platforms and local managerial responsibility for a Sydney-based team that includes digital output journalists, digital reporters, a growth analyst and a small streaming operation.
It will also oversee management of a small team of journalists covering Australian news.
You will lead two key areas of focus for the team.
Firstly, an operation that can respond to the biggest breaking news overnight for global audiences coming to the site, cementing our reputation for live and breaking news and making the most of the scale of our global reporting.
This operation will also, crucially, develop our digital offer and curation during UK overnight hours to ensure that UK morning audiences wake up to a high quality, well-edited, up-to-date and rich offer that sets up the news day.
Are you the right candidate?Excellent editorial judgement with substantial experience of leading a team to execute a digital coverage plan and overseeing breaking news in text and video on digital platforms.Demonstrable experience of managing digital live pages on UK and global stories, commissioning livestreams and reporters to deliver for digital in text and video in breaking situations.Substantial experience of editing text stories to deliver high quality reporting that works for digital audiences and commissioning digital video edits.A track record of successfully using audience and search data to improve digital coverage, drive change and build new digital audiences to drive growth.Strong leadership skills and experience of leading and motivating teams operating under pressure and across time zones.Expertise in driving coverage of both UK and international news and current affairs.A proven understanding of the BBC's editorial values and how to uphold them.About the BBCWe don't focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it.
