We are seeking the services of an innovative and experienced Neurologist with subspecialisation in Stroke Medicine and Services, as Stroke Lead for the ISLHD. The position of Neurologist – Stroke Lead ISLHD supports the Neurology Service for the district and the Head of Service, to achieve comprehensive and equitable stroke care delivery of high standard in the rapidly evolving field of Stroke medicine. The successful applicant will lead planning, coordination and implementation of Stroke services across the ISLHD, and will include equal participation in the on-call roster, inpatient, and outpatient clinical care in both Stroke (~0.8 FTE total including ~0.4 FTE admin) and General Neurology (~0.2 FTE). Clinical inpatient responsibilities will be primarily based at Wollongong Hospital, with on-call consultation and outpatient duties at both Wollongong (onsite) and district hospitals remote and onsite (e.g. Shoalhaven, Shellharbour TIA clinics). General Neurology Department activities and responsibilities are part of the role. Applicants expecting to be awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) within six months may be considered. Stoke Care Setting for ISLHD The ISLHD developed one of NSW's first geographical Stroke units and has made rapid progress in acute stroke service provision in a limited resource setting. Wollongong Hospital is the largest of ISLHD's eight hospitals, treating more than 50 000 patients annually. It is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units. The ISLHD incorporates a number of hospitals, including soon to be redeveloped Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital Nowra and Shellharbour Hospitals, and Bulli Rehabilitation/Geriatric service. TWH provides hyperacute reperfusion assessment and delivery, by 24/7 registrar and specialist nurse response team, dovetailing with ED triage and ED assessment, and with Neurologists on call with remote radiology access. TWH has a dedicated 34 bed Neurology/Neurosurgery ward with 8 bed high intensity monitored unit. ISLHD collaborates with the University of Wollongong including the Centre for Innovation and structured research initiatives. Medical students from UOW are placed at Wollongong Hospital, with high retention to junior staffing and training positions. Selection Criteria Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Neurology and/or equivalent and specialist recognition and further training/qualifications in Stroke including research and trial coordination capability; the successful applicant would ideally have both completed a Stroke Fellowship and gained extensive experience in Stroke medicine. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality Stroke and Neurology services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of quality improvement, policy and process development and relevant service development with attention to strategic and situational nuance and relevant detail. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other hospital staff. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
