Job Description:
An NBN Engineer (National Broadband Network Engineer) plays a vital role in the design, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of broadband infrastructure.
Their work ensures the efficient delivery of high-speed internet and telecommunications services.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Design and Implementation:
Design, configure, and implement broadband network solutions to support NBN infrastructure.
Develop and maintain Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP), Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN), and Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) network designs.
Ensure compliance with NBN Co. standards and guidelines during installations and upgrades.
Installation and Testing:
Install, commission, and test network equipment, including optical line terminals (OLTs), routers, and switches.
Perform signal quality tests, loss measurements, and splicing for fiber optic networks.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues in copper and fiber optic connections.
Network Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
Monitor network performance and proactively address faults to minimize downtime.
Diagnose and repair faults in NBN infrastructure, including fiber and node systems.
Perform preventive maintenance on hardware and software components.
Customer and Stakeholder Engagement:
Liaise with customers, contractors, and other stakeholders to coordinate installations, upgrades, and fault resolutions.
Provide technical support and guidance to end-users and third-party vendors.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and network configurations.
Generate and submit detailed reports on network performance and completed projects.
Update network schematics and databases to reflect changes in infrastructure.
Compliance and Safety:
Adhere to workplace health and safety standards during field operations.
Ensure compliance with NBN Co. policies, local regulations, and telecommunications codes.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Networking, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred).
Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CompTIA Network+, Fiber Optics Certification) are a plus.
Technical Skills:
Knowledge of fiber optic and copper network technologies (FTTP, FTTN, HFC, VDSL, GPON, etc.).
Proficiency with network devices like routers, switches, and OLTs.
Experience with tools such as OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer), splicing machines, and cable testers.
Familiarity with network protocols (TCP/IP, MPLS, OSPF, BGP, etc.).
Experience:
Previous experience in broadband network implementation, preferably in an NBN environment.
Hands-on experience with fiber splicing, fault finding, and network maintenance.
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to troubleshooting.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
Additional Requirements:
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to field locations.
Availability for on-call rotations and flexible working hours.
