The Natural Environment Program Officer provides high quality environmental advice to support decision making for statutory, environment related assessments particularly under the Environment Effect Act 1978 and Planning and Environment Act 1987. The role combines technical biodiversity related knowledge with well-developed problem-solving, collaboration and outcome-focused skills to minimise risk to Victoria's natural environment for communities, while supporting priority projects and programs in Victoria's regions.
Ability to interpret, apply and communicate relevant policy and legislation as it relates to major state infrastructure development proposals, particularly the Native Vegetation regulations and Planning and Environment Act 1987, Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 controls, Environmental Effects Act 1978, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation 1999 and the Ramsar Convention will be critical.
The role will support environment portfolio case-management for planning referrals and work with a range of stakeholders including Traditional Owners and public authorities, particularly Melbourne Water, DEECA Water and Catchments, Department of Transport and Planning, Port of Hastings Corporation and other stakeholders to ensure the consistent, integrated and efficient delivery of natural environment programs and projects services.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/QualificationsAn appropriate tertiary qualification related to natural resource management or other relevant field.Good technical knowledge and understanding of biodiversity issues, legislation and policy, specifically the Native Vegetation regulations and the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, Environmental Effects Act 1978 and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation 1999 is mandatory.Understanding of wetland and marine environments including management of Ramsar wetlands.This is a fixed term position available for a period of 18 months. The work location for this position is Melbourne, Eastern Metro with hybrid work arrangements available.
