National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young People The National Commission for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (National Commission) was established as an Executive Agency on 26 September 2024, to be operational from 13 January 2025. The National Commission will sit within the Social Services portfolio, with the Minister for Social Services the responsible Minister.
The Position
The National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (National Commissioner) is the Head of Agency under the Public Service Act 1999 and under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 .
The Australian Government is seeking a respected Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leader to undertake the important and challenging role of National Commissioner.
The National Commissioner will be responsible for:
Promoting and protecting the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people through strategic policy advice and reports to Government on matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families. Providing advice to Government on, and informing the implementation of, key policy frameworks which seek to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families. Promoting and enhancing coordination across Commonwealth and state and territory governments, commissioners, guardians and advocates and non-government organisations on matters related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. Undertaking consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families, relevant Commonwealth and state and territory governments, commissioners, guardians and advocates and non-government organisations. Ensuring the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families are reflected in advice to government. To be successful for this role, you will:
Demonstrate high level leadership and vision, outstanding collaborative skills, good judgement, professionalism and integrity. Possess a strong understanding of governance, legislative and broader government processes. Be an effective and collaborative communicator who can engage sensitively across diverse groups and in a range of settings. Have a strong understanding of issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. Be able to bring together a broad range of stakeholder views to inform the development of the ongoing commissioner role under primary legislation. Other conditions and checks may also be required.
The remuneration for the National Commissioner will be set by the Remuneration Tribunal, with the base salary anticipated to be in line with a SES Band 3 salary range.
