Molecular Genomics Scientist

Molecular Genomics Scientist
Company:

The Garvan Institute Of Medical Research

Details of the offer

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research brings together world-leading researchers and clinicians, collaborating locally and globally to improve human health.
Our mission is to harness all the information encoded in our genome to diagnose better, treat, predict and prevent disease.
From individual patients with rare diseases to the many thousands affected by complex, widespread illnesses, we are pioneering discoveries across diseases that have the deepest impact on our community.
THE OPPORTUNITY We are seeking a talented and experienced molecular genomics scientist to join Powell Lab's Translational Genomics Program.
The program focuses on understanding the impact of human genetic variation on diseases at the level of individual cells and using this information to develop a translational impact on human health.
We have developed globally leading single-cell and genomic data cohorts to achieve this in multiple cell systems (immune, stem cells, lung, and cancers).
By analysing this data and other experimental validation, we develop companion tests to inform therapy choice and, excitingly, identify cell-specific novel therapeutic targets.
The scientist will lead the generation of high-throughput genomics data, particularly single-cell and spatial assays, on large cohorts of clinical samples.
At times, the role will include working closely with industry partners on the testing and development of early-stage technology.
The incumbent will work closely with Professor Powell and senior research staff to evaluate and implement new molecular techniques within the program.
Salary: $95,800 + 14% super + salary packaging (depending on experience) Employment Type: 2 year term contract with possibility to extend SNAPSHOT OF BENEFITS Generous salary packaging to save you income tax on your wages thereby boosting your monthly take home pay (max.
$15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals/accom) Ample opportunities for on-going training and development Stimulating, diverse and highly international research environment Flexible work arrangements e.g.
start / finish times 18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents including paid superannuation A range of additional leave types to meet your personal needs including cultural leave, conference leave, community service and study leave Discounted Health Insurance Lifestyle discounts with our community partners

WHAT YOU WILL DO Manage experiments generating single-cell data using high-throughput platforms such as 10x Genomics (single-cell and spatial), including sample preparation, cell capture, library generation, and QC.
This will involve working closely with senior research staff for experimental and workflow planning.
Establish and maintain excellent records of molecular requirements and techniques for all projects, working closely with the bioinformatics team to ensure project meta-data is recorded for downstream analysis.
Identify opportunities to improve lab efficiencies and throughput in the molecular genomics workflows.
Work closely with key team members to provide detailed information on samples, data, and overall project progress.
Provide ad hoc support in other projects across the team where necessary.
Develop and update clear SOPs.
Support biobanking of primary and derived biological material necessary for the long-term development of the program.
Contribute to the writing and authorship of scientific publications.

ABOUT YOU The key skills and experience include: BSc (Hons) or MSc in a relevant area of science and a deep understanding of genomics and molecular techniques.
Minimum 3 years of experience in a molecular biology lab.
Experience with single-cell technology or other high-throughput genomic techniques.
Knowledge of molecular biology protocols associated with single-cell technology and 'next-generation sequencing'.
Highly organised and excellent communicator.
The ability to assess priorities and manage competing deadlines.
Excellent written and oral communication, representation and interpersonal skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders.
An ability to work independently and efficiently within a diverse team.
Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
Punctuality and being able to work flexible hours if needed.

Desirable skills include: Experience in the collection and processing of human blood and tissue specimens.
Experience in molecular biology techniques, e.g DNA/RNA extraction.
