Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory The Doherty Institute Medical Laboratory Scientist Grade 1 or Grade 2 (depending on experience)1.0 EFT12 month Fixed-TermThe WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza has operated since 1992 and is one of 5 WHO (World Health Organisation) designated Centres that is involved in human influenza virus analysis, influenza vaccine recommendations and influenza antiviral effectiveness monitoring.
The Centre also has interests in other respiratory viruses (such as RSV and SARS-CoV-2) and conducts research activities across all of these areas.
Your new role: We are looking for a passionate and dedicated individual to join the Antiviral group at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI), VIDRL.
The Antiviral group currently monitors seasonal influenza strains for reduced sensitivity to licensed antivirals and performs research on investigational antivirals to influenza using preclinical models of infection.
This position is for a Full Time Research Scientist (Grade 1 or Grade 2, depending on experience) working 80 hours per fortnight, based at The Doherty Institute in Parkville, Melbourne.
This is a 12 month appointment in the first instance with good potential for extension.
Perform various in vitro assays to determine drug sensitivities/drug toxicities against influenza and other respiratory virusesCharacterize influenza viruses and other respiratory viruses using a variety of molecular techniques such as real time PCR, Sanger sequencing, pyrosequencing and NGSPerform cell culture and virus isolationPerform classical virological techniques such as TCID50, plaquing, virus passagingCarry out basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, cloning, transformations/transfections, recombinant protein expressionWork with animals to conduct various experimentsAccurately record experimental data (using both paper and electronic media)Effectively plan work programs and assay set upsInterpret results from recorded dataAssist in the development and testing of new methodsInteract positively with Centre staff on findingsAbout you: This position requires the successful applicant to have a minimum of a University BSc or Hons degree with a major in genetics/microbiology/immunology/Virology (or similar discipline) and a minimum of 1 year laboratory experience for Grade 1 or 5 years laboratory experience for Grade 2, preferably in either a genetic/virological/microbiological/or immunological discipline.
Required skills: Experienced in cell culture techniques and virus isolation/passagingProficiency in basic virology assays such as TCID50, plaquing, cytotoxicity assaysProficiency in in vitro assays, ideally in determining drug sensitivityExperienced in RNA extraction, real time PCR, Sanger sequencing, NGSGood molecular biology skills such as real time-PCR, cloning, transformations/transfections, etc.Able to accurately record data electronically or onto worksheetsAble to contribute effectively as a team member and demonstrate independence to plan, organise and conduct experimentsAbility to coordinate with other team members to ensure efficient use of shared resourcesWell organised, self-motivated and keen to learn new techniquesSound knowledge of biosafety issues in handling infectious agentsAble to conduct large assays accurately either manually or with robotic assistanceAble to analyse data using standard programs such as Excel, Prism, etc.
