Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate two open cut and three underground Steelmaking coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin, every year producing millions of tonnes of the highest quality hard coking coal for this purpose.
Job DescriptionWe are seeking a project management Mechanical Engineer to join the site team at Capcoal Surface Mine on a full-time, permanent basis with Anglo American. Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, you will be responsible for the safe and successful execution of projects for the Dragline and Shovel mobile equipment.
This site-based position will see you out on the field performing regular inspections and interacting with our operational and trade workforce on a daily basis. You will also be required to maintain equipment availability and reliability through defect elimination, maintaining engineering compliance and the identification of downtime drivers and implementation of solutions.

This role will see you responsible for:
Collaborate with the engineering team to design, plan, and implement mechanical systems and equipment for open-cut coal mining operations.Manage capital projects and major equipment shutdowns including draglines and shovel.Perform regular inspections, audits, and maintenance assessments to ensure equipment and machinery are operating at optimal levels and comply with safety standards.Develop strategies to improve equipment efficiency, reliability, and productivity, while minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.Analyze data and provide technical expertise to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues to keep mining operations running smoothly.Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical components into mining processes.Conduct feasibility studies for new equipment acquisitions, upgrades, and expansion projects.Stay up to date with industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements to propose innovative solutions.Consistently apply Safety & Health principles in all site interactions and take full ownership for safety on site.QualificationsTo be successful you will have the following:
Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and heavy machinery used in mining operations.Experience working on mobile equipment (preferred) or fixed plant equipment on an open-cut mine site.Demonstrated ability in project management for a mine site (coal preferred), including leading projects whilst working independently.Previous exposure to equipment shutdowns for dragline and shovel mobile equipment is desirable.Previous experience with SAP or a similar ERP will be desirable.Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identify and address mechanical challenges.Adherence to safety regulations and a commitment to creating a safe working environment for all team members.Additional InformationPermanent, full-time position at Capcoal Surface Mine, Middlemount QLDMonday to Friday site role with 9-day fortnight availableCompetitive Salary + 12% Superannuation + Annual BonusResidential, FIFO (company funded) & DIDO optionsSeveral conveniently timed, daily bus transfers from the airport to camp and onto siteSubsidised Anglo accommodation and company funded camp with meals providedDomestic relocation assistance to Middlemount townshipGym membership perksAnglo American company benefitsWhat we Offer When you join Anglo American, you can expect to enjoy a competitive salary and benefits package and a range of flexible work arrangements that support the balance of work, family and individual circumstances.
