The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Reef Authority) is a non-corporate Commonwealth entity and operates as a statutory agency under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (the Marine Park Act). The Reef Authority sits within the Australian Government Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Portfolio and reports to the Minister for the Environment and Water.
Membership of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Board (Authority Board) is established under the Marine Park Act and comprises a Chairperson, the Chief Executive Officer, and 5 members including a First Nations person, a member with significant tourism knowledge or experience, and a nominee from the Queensland Government.
Applications and Eligibility Applications are invited to fill up to 2 upcoming member vacancies on the Authority Board. The successful candidates must have an understanding of the Reef Authority and its role in providing for the long-term protection and conservation of the environment, biodiversity, and heritage values of the Great Barrier Reef Region, including assisting Australia in meeting its international obligations in relation to the World Heritage Convention.
The appointments will be made by the Governor-General, on the recommendation of the Minister for the Environment and Water, following a merit-based selection process.
To be eligible for appointment, candidates will need to demonstrate significant knowledge and/or experience related to one or more of the following fields:
science (including one or more fields related to climate change, marine science, coastal ecology, fisheries, social sciences, or engineering); natural resource management; Indigenous matters relating to the Marine Park; the tourism industry associated with the Marine Park; business or industry; resource economics; public sector governance; regulation; education or communications; strategic management.
