Primary Objective: The position is responsible for setting the direction and strategically positioning the monitoring programs across the Territory to inform water resource management decisions.
The role leads the establishment of standards for the analysis, synthesis, and translation of water knowledge and other information to support department objectives, policy, and program development.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Design, deliver, and review water monitoring and water quality programs to ensure alignment with understanding the resource and considering current and future demands and requirements.
Strategic direction and management of water monitoring assets and instrumentation for both surface water and groundwater flood management.
Design and deliver contracted services and identify opportunities for business development.
Audit and provide advice to executive management, government, and agencies ensuring operations comply with government policies, plans, and work health and safety legislation.
Lead and manage the Water Monitoring team, mentor, and oversee the management of up to 20 staff with three direct reports.
Prepare and manage significant procurements within the Water Monitoring Team.
Selection Criteria: Essential:
Demonstrated experience in developing appropriate monitoring, technology, and standards with policy, programs, and key performance indicators that align with relevant plans.
Understanding of environmental monitoring techniques, trends, and developments, including data management and systems.
Ability to interpret and analyze water monitoring data and develop water monitoring programs.
Demonstrated leadership skills and experience, with the ability to work collaboratively across a multidisciplinary team and nationally through peers.
Demonstrated experience in project and contract delivery.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, flexible in dealing with a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to lead and participate in health and safety discussions in the workplace.
Desirable:
Tertiary qualifications in science, environmental management, or a related field.
