If you require an adjustment for the recruitment process or job, please discuss this with the contact officer.Aboriginal applicants will be granted priority consideration for this vacancy.Primary ObjectiveLead a mining team to deliver risk-based, contemporary regulation of the mining industry ensuring assessment and compliance activities align with the Environment Protection Act 2019 (the Act), agency strategic objectives, and Northern Territory Government policy frameworks.Context StatementThe Mining Division regulates mining activities from the initial assessment of projects and grant of environmental mining licence through to closure, including monitoring operator compliance and mine site remediation and rehabilitation.Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesLead a small team of professional officers in the regulation of mining activities in the Northern Territory, providing expert guidance to shape best practice methods in the assessment of risk, calculation of security bonds, and preparation of evidence-based recommendations for consideration by the delegate.Build the capability and responsiveness of the team to ensure the effective delivery of contemporary regulation and services across the Northern Territory, particularly swift adaptation to changing strategic priorities including outcomes arising from the NT Government's environmental regulatory reform program.Provide high-quality, practical advice to mining operators and company representatives in the development and submission of documentation for approval under the Act to assist them to comply with legislative requirements whilst balancing commercial imperatives.Monitor the performance of Territory-based mining activities against recognised industry standards, codes of practice, and obligations under the Act, investigating incidents and other relevant matters in line with legislative requirements.Project manage and identify solutions to complex regulatory matters including providing evidence-based recommendations for effective systems support or enforcement actions.Develop and maintain collaborative and productive working relationships across the agency and with external stakeholders to support effective regulation of mining activities in the Northern Territory.Prepare high-level documentation including ministerial briefs, CEO memos, reports, and contributions to Cabinet Submissions.Selection CriteriaTertiary qualifications in a related discipline (e.g. environmental science or engineering).Significant experience in the regulation of a major industry, preferably mining, including the proven ability to apply and guide others in risk-based and contemporary regulatory practices.Demonstrated effective leadership and people management skills including supporting change and fostering positive workplace cultures.Well-developed written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, commercial acumen, and high-level strategic, conceptual, analytical, and collaborative capability, including the ability to tailor messages to suit diverse audiences.Proven performance sustaining productive relationships with a diverse range, and sometimes challenging, stakeholders.Project management experience including procurement and contract administration.Working knowledge of the mining sector, the Environment Protection Act 2019 and former Mining Management Act 2001, and how assessment and compliance activities can either facilitate and/or hinder economic development within the Northern Territory.Demonstrated experience in compliance and enforcement, including holding Certificate IV in Government Investigations.Important: Be careful - Don't provide your bank or credit card details when applying for jobs.
