Job Function: Allied Health Professionals
Project: Western Health launched the Lived Experience Advisor Program (LEAP) to employ consumer leaders as Lived Experience Advisors (LEAs). LEAs are embedded as team members across service areas to implement projects in partnership with clinical and program staff. By using a range of codesign methods, LEAs amplify the consumer voice and build a culture of consumer engagement. Coming from diverse backgrounds, LEAs also ensure consumer-centred projects focus on diversity and inclusion as well as improving health care practices.
About the ProjectThe Department of Health is investing in a two-year program 'Timely Emergency Care 2', supporting health services to continue to improve hospital-wide patient flow. The improvement program will bring together health service teams across Victoria to learn and share with each other while being supported by local and international experts in patient flow and improvement science.
Western Health sites Sunshine Hospital and Footscray Hospital have been selected via an EOI to participate in TEC2. A leadership team and change group for Excellence in flow will be established and meet regularly to ensure the program's goals are achieved. A Lived Experience Advisor will be required to attend the leadership meetings and applicable change group meetings, contributing to opportunities designed to improve timely access and emergency care by improving patient flow and optimising the use of inpatient capacity. A major focus for Western Health will be to improve the care of our older patients.
About Lived Experience ParticipationThe Lived Experience Advisor will support WEST program from January 2025 to March 2026. The advisor will be required to attend monthly leadership meetings, participate in change groups, provide information to staff, interview consumers/carers and attend external project sessions as requested.
Who will be suitable?Ideally, the Lived Experience Advisor (LEA) has a keen interest in improving patient flow. The LEA will have utilised Western Health services in the past and will be able to draw on personal experience with being cared for previously in our Emergency Departments, requiring admission to an inpatient service and or having a long extended stay in hospital. As this project focuses on improving the care of the older patient, the LEA will be >65 years old, or a carer for a consumer >65 years old.
