Legal Officer

The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Legal Officer, reporting to the Company Secretary. This position will support the effective strategic and administrative legal management of business activities including contracts, sales, personnel, and finance matters advice and recommendations to stakeholders on a range of legal and commercial matters.
This role is Perth office based with required regular site attendances.
To be successful in the role, the following is essential:

Legal degree qualification
A minimum 3 years' experience is preferred
Previous experience working as in-house legal advisor in the Australian resources industry (desirable)
A strong desire to learn, and to broaden knowledge and skills, in the resources industry
Good interpersonal skills, polite and respectful of others, with the ability to listen, consult, negotiate, and manage relationships with a range of stakeholders
Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated aptitude to review, understand and prepare contractual and legal documents
Good analytical, research and evaluation skills, with the ability to provide solutions to problems and issues
A strong disciplined work ethic with a commitment to meeting work deadlines
Permanent Australian work rights
National Police clearance

Key Duties: Provide guidance, support, and assistance to stakeholders as directed with respect to:

Proper management of contracts including governance, risk, performance, and management, and making of appropriate decisions based on risk
Development of contracts and documentation including contract management plans, templates, policies, procedures, variations, notices, and communications
Compliance with company corporate management policies
Maintenance of accurate records including performance against KPIs, risk and outcomes and undertaking corrective action as required
Assessment and validation of contract documentation
Preparation of contract variations and change requests
Preparation of company claims by contractors under contracts
Assessment of contractor claims against the company under contracts
Preparation for and participation in contract negotiations
Interpretation of contract requirements, terms and conditions and ensuring that all parties understand and deliver on their responsibilities
Development and maintenance of effective working relationships with others including suppliers and contractors including liaising if required with suppliers and contractors to resolve contractual issues and escalate complex issues
Review and evaluation of expiring contracts and processes for exercising extension options, contract expiry and transition management

About Karara Mining
Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
