Insurance & Superannuation Law (Legal)Government - State (Government & Defence) GESB is a WA State Government agency that provides superannuation schemes for current and former public sector employees in Western Australia.

As our Legal Officer, you will contribute to our overall purpose of helping our members achieve a quality retirement.
We do this by responsibly managing their retirement savings, delivering strong long-term investment returns, and offering relevant support so they can make informed decisions.
About the role This is a 12-month fixed term contract.
The term may be extended, subject to business needs.
Reporting to the General Counsel, you will be part of a small team within the broader Office of the CEO.
What this position involves The Legal Officer will be responsible for: Providing legal advice to GESB's business units in relation to the interpretation and application of relevant legislation, contractual arrangements, member communications and other relevant legal areas.
Assisting with the complaints management processes (including complaints referred to external dispute resolution bodies such as the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA)).
Undertaking activities relating to management of legal disputes, including liaising with the State Solicitor's Office and external legal counsel, and representing GESB at conciliation conferences.
Conducting legal review of internal and external documentation, including policies and disclosure documentation such as product information materials, to ensure compliance with legal requirements and appropriate risk management.
Assisting the Senior Legal Officer as required.
Identifying and communicating, and where appropriate managing, potential improvements in GESB's policies and procedures from a legal, risk and compliance perspective.
Assisting the Board Secretary with the management of Board and Committee, including review of corporate disclosure and collation of meeting materials.
Other duties as required.

You'll have: Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment with others and contribute to team goals.
Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking for problem solving and the ability to work with ambiguity and uncertainty.
Minimum four years post admission experience in law in the financial services sector.
High degree of contract negotiations experience and the ability to balance legal and commercial requirements.
Practical experience in corporate governance and assisting in the management of Board and Committees is desirable.
High degree of legislative interpretative ability and knowledge, with a demonstrated ability in the application of legal concepts.
Legal qualifications and admitted to practise in the Supreme Court of Western Australia and eligible to hold a practising certificate in Western Australia.
Tertiary qualification in law is essential.
