This role provides legal, governance, risk, and compliance oversight with a prime focus on employment law, industrial relations and workplace health and safety.
Responsible for overseeing implementation and management of specific compliance matters for Hamilton Island, including but not limited to requirements of Fair Work Australia, the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman (OFWO), WorkSafe Queensland and SafeWork NSW.
The role ensures operations comply with applicable laws, regulations and industry standards, while safeguarding Hamilton Island's assets, guests/visitors, employees and reputation.
Your Role The primary focus of this role is to lead and deliver specific compliance projects and provide legal and strategic advice and support to the Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel.
You will be a key partner to the Legal Team; WHS Team; People, Culture & Development Team; and senior managers.
We are seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel with the ability to navigate diverse and complex matters.

Key Responsibilities Provide expert guidance on all aspects of employment law, including contracts, performance management, industrial disputes, and compliance with regulatory requirementsAdvise on employee-related issues in business transactions, contracts, and agreementsMonitor and report on industrial relations complianceConduct and advise on workplace investigations and disputesManage claims, investigations, litigation, and disputesLead and drive implementation of compliance matters and projectsDevelop and implement compliance policies and governance processesPartner with the WHS Team to address a broad range of WHS mattersProvide strategic legal advice on restructuring, outsourcing, and workplace complianceDraft, review, and negotiate a variety of contractsConduct legal research and offer advice on regulatory and compliance mattersOversee external counsel and ensure quality of advice and servicesAbout You As the Legal Counsel & Compliance Manager, you'll bring a strong background in legal strategy and compliance, with a proven record of navigating complex legal matters.

This position requires a proactive, detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks – employment law in particular – and a passion for maintaining the highest standards of operational integrity.
Your qualifications and experience include: Bachelor of Laws and admitted as a Solicitor in Australia (preferably in NSW and/or Queensland)Minimum of 6-8 years of experience in law, compliance, risk management, or a similar roleExperience in employment law, labour relations, regulatory compliance, ideally with experience working with Government Authorities such as the OFWOExpertise in workplace health and safety, dispute resolution and general commercial lawExperience developing and implementing audit and governance processes and policiesYou have the below skills and attributes: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to develop and implement effective compliance, legal and risk mitigation strategiesExcellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence and educate diverse teamsHigh ethical standards and integrityExceptional written and oral communication skillsStrong attention to detailHamilton Island is much more than a great place to work – it's an amazing career opportunity.
