About the Role
The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music is seeking an experienced and accomplished wind ensemble conductor to join as a Lecturer in Music, focusing on leading and teaching the Conservatorium Concert Band. In this role, you will inspire students by developing their ensemble skills through dynamic, imaginative teaching methods that create a productive and engaging learning environment.
Your responsibilities will include: Conducting the Conservatorium Concert Band during rehearsals and performances, planning concert programs, and collaborating closely with academic and professional staff, as well as instrumental teachers.Contributing to student assessments and auditions and ensuring diversity in concert programming.Working under the supervision of the Wind Symphony director, and in consultation with other relevant academic staff in instrumental studies.Mentoring individual students in close connection with rehearsal times and preparing spoken introductions in concerts.Consulting as needed with wind/brass/percussion instrumental staff on repertoire programming, ensemble seating, and student progress.Collaborating effectively with professional staff who support rehearsals and performances.Developing formative and summative assessments linked to learning goals and subject aims.Delivering research-informed teaching by keeping up-to-date with performance and pedagogical research.Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a dynamic wind ensemble conductor with a postgraduate degree and experience in tertiary or secondary contexts. You have a national reputation in wind band conducting, with expertise in both established and diverse repertoire. Your proven ability to mentor students and lead high-quality rehearsals ensures standout performances.
You will also have: A postgraduate degree in wind ensemble conducting (doctorate preferred), and experience conducting wind ensembles.A national reputation in wind band conducting, and a record of activity with relevant state and national peak bodies.A substantial record of successful secondary and/or tertiary ensemble teaching experience.Detailed knowledge of the wind band repertoire, including canonical works and works that represent diverse voices.Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct effective rehearsals.Diverse knowledge areas and skills in music performance.Demonstrated management skills, including inclusive decision making and resource management.This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check.
