The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) has an international reputation in biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and microbiology, including proteomics and genomics, gene regulation, metabolism, environmental microbiology and infectious diseases.
BABS teaches approximately 2,000 full- time equivalent students, and has 34 academics, 28 postdoctoral research associates or fellows, approximately 20 other research staff, 152 higher degree research students, 12 technical officers and 4 administrative staff.
The School's yearly operational budget is approximately $11M, with available research funds of approximately $9 million annually.

UNSW's Education Focused roles (EF) enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students.
Those who are appointed to this prestigious stream will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university's teaching and learning communities.
It is expected that the appointee will progress on a continual satisfactory and upward trajectory in their performance and specific performance expectations will be set individually with the Head of School/Supervisor.

About the role
Level B ($123k - $145k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading Fixed Term – 2 years Full-time (35 hours per week) The role reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:
Oversee and direct the first-year biology program.
Demonstrate and continually develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
Lead or support the coordination of undergraduate courses on biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, or related disciplines.
Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics.
Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance.
Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant) and contribute to Work Integrated Learning (WIL) initiatives and programs offered by the School and Faculty.
Make a positive contribution to School meetings, seminars, student recruitment activities and outreach events, and be a member of School/Faculty committees, as required.
Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
A PhD in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology or a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
Actively stays up to date with discipline knowledge and professional development.
Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
Evidence of teaching quality, effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g.
relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales).
Demonstrated experience in teaching large level 1 courses (desirable) Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
