Sirius College is a Non-denominational independent school (F-12) and is one of the leading educational institutions in Northern Melbourne with a mission to empower students to become critical thinkers and socially responsible individuals, motivated by moral values and a belief in tolerance, diversity and harmony.About this role:A Learning Support Teacher is specifically employed to work with students who need extra support or require an advanced program of education, in order to complete their learning successfully. A key aspect of working in special needs is identifying individual needs and being responsible for creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment.Job tasks and responsibilities:Assess the abilities and potential of students requiring a specific study program.Organize a Teacher Referral Form and Parent Consent Form prior to providing support sessions.Write cognitive assessment referrals.Complete the Parent Questionnaire for cognitive and language assessments.Provide specialist education advice to the school principal and teachers.Create/organize an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student by collaborating with teachers which outlines the goals that she will work toward and associated activities.Develop and adapt the curriculum to make it relevant for students with disabilities.Prepare lessons and resources for the students with special needs and at risk.Teach academic subjects and practical self-help skills to individuals or small groups of students by using various methods within or outside the class.Work closely with other professionals, including speech therapists and psychologists.Organize the Psychologist for the cognitive assessments in conjunction with the Speech Pathologist.Organize meetings with the Psychologist and parents to discuss cognitive assessment results. Feedback from the Psychologist to be given to the Speech Pathologist.Liaise with parents and teachers to provide feedback on students' progress.Organize and attend Parent Support Group (PSG) meetings.Ensure a high standard of record keeping in relation to students with disabilities.Attend in-services and meetings appropriate to the position and be knowledgeable about the range of student support and welfare services and agencies in the local and wider community.Knowledge Skills & Abilities:Tertiary degree in a teaching discipline.Current VIT registration.Ability to integrate IT into the curriculum and teaching practice.Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students and colleagues.Able to manage pastoral issues relative to staff, students and parents through effective dialogue and process.Well-developed report writing and oral communication skills.Up-to-date knowledge of contemporary teaching application and theory.Job Applications close: Saturday, 23 November 2024*Early applications are appreciated to assist the interview process.
