About the Role

Santos is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated professional to take on the role of Lead Aboriginal Engagement and Cultural Heritage specialist to oversee the Eastern Australia Aboriginal Engagement team in the delivery of native title and cultural heritage agreements, on behalf of Santos.
* This is primarily an office-based role with some field travel required.
* This role is open to be based either in Darwin or Brisbane.
Key accountabilities include:
Provide leadership and guidance to the EABU Aboriginal Engagement Team in translating the Santos Aboriginal Engagement Policy into operational practice.
Provide expert advice to Santos and its joint venturers in relation to Aboriginal engagement.
Develop and maintain effective, mutually beneficial relationships with key EABU Aboriginal stakeholder groups.
Provide high-level insights and strategic advice on Aboriginal engagement matters supporting compliance and fulfillment of legal and agreement obligations as they relate to Santos' operations.
Lead negotiations to secure native title and cultural heritage agreements with Aboriginal groups in support of operational requirements.
Drive the implementation of Indigenous Land Use Agreements and Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMP), including delivery of cultural heritage inductions/awareness to Santos employees and contractors.
Develop, maintain, and strengthen Santos' relationships with key Aboriginal groups and relevant government stakeholders, statutory bodies (including the Central Land Council and the Northern Land Council) and other external stakeholders.
Consult with Aboriginal groups related to Santos' businesses, with a particular focus on policy change, emerging and current issues management, and conflict resolution.
Provide leadership and guidance to the Aboriginal Engagement Team in the development and implementation of overarching Aboriginal Engagement strategies and policies for Santos.
Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve proactive outcomes for Santos' EA/WA region activities.
About You
To stand out in this role, we are looking for candidates with excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills with demonstrated experience in:
Negotiation with Aboriginal communities across a spectrum of sectors and settings.
Ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal communities as well as an established network or ability to establish networks and positive working relationships among Aboriginal communities and organisations within the Northern Territory.
Knowledge, understanding and experience with Aboriginal peoples from an historic and contemporary perspective.
Experience with Australian native title and cultural heritage and social issues that are influenced in the context of the oil and gas industry.
High level understanding of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the Northern Territory Aboriginal Land Rights Act, and The Northern Territory Sacred Sites Act.
Experience working with or within State, Commonwealth, or local governments on Aboriginal issues or related matters more broadly.
Ideally, you have tertiary qualifications in environmental management, Indigenous affairs, community affairs, or law and/or relevant experience in a similar role.
